comment: | Bought this lens being defective. the only info i got was that the lens was internally damaged and therefor the image quality was horrendous. the seller tried to let it be repaired but was not economical. when i got the lens it seemed the lens was not just a bit but heavily decentred. indicating that one or more lens element were not seated correctly. looking in the lens everything seemed to be normal. i tried to open op the lens and was praying the incorrectly mounted lens element would be easily reachable but to my joy it wasn't all that easy. i had to remove the whole inner zooming mechanism to get to the right element. for me the lens element that came loose was the first element behind the aperture (looking at the lens element images provided by dyxum it is the element left of the ED and HR elements). the reason the lens element came loose was most likely some kind of hit against the lens body. this lens element is only secured in place by three dots of glue meaning this is the highest risk element in the whole lens. which should be fine with normal use but it would be nice knowing the lens can withstand a nock or two. what is also interesting is that almost the whole lens is made from metal, except for the piece underneath the lens mount. this would be the weak link in the lens might if fall down with your camera still attached. This is the reason i give the lens a 3 for its build quality. it shows Samyang really tried to get it right but could have done better at these points. overall the images i get after the repair are great. i still havent tested it a whole lot but can see the AF is pretty decent and the image quality seems to be somewhat better than my other lens (which i 13 years older). one other note: the lens is stated to be parfocal, but zooming-in the lens has to keep up with the zooming action to stay sharp. meaning the lens isn't really parfocal but this was added in software which still is pretty neat, but not true parfocal. |
