positive: | Sharp Value for money, 67mm filter ring matches all my Tampon 28-78 and 17-28mm lenses. Raised marker for indexing the lens mount so can feel it in the dark when changing lenses rather than just a painted line. twist and push pool for zoom |
negative: | zoom only locks at 100mm focusing on areas which lack contrast such as clouds Lens cap falls of quite easily |
comment: | Side by side comparisons show little difference compared to Sony 100-400mm zoom. I also bought the Sigma TS 111 tripod collar mount. It is quite expensive but worthwhile as when zoomed to 400mm it would otherwise be quite a turning moment on your tripod and lens mount. there are now much cheaper third part collars available. One down side I've come across if th difficulty focusing on clouds where it hunts and rarely snaps in to ficus. |

comment: | I've gotten a lot of use of both the Tamron 70-300 and Sony 200-600, but I often find the long end of the Tamron a bit too short, and the short end of the Sony too long. The Sony FE 100-400 GM OSS is well regarded, but 255 grams heavier without the tripod collar. "MADE IN JAPAN" The Sony FE 1.4X teleconverter fits this lens and the lens can be partially used with it. Power cycling the camera after mounting the lens gets the aperture mechanism and manual focus working. |

negative: | none so far... |
comment: | Lots of bang for the bucks Love the range, quite good handling on both A7iii and A7Rii. Bought it "as new" including tripod ring. Love it for birding. |

positive: | - low weight - compact size - AF performance (including tracking and Eye-AF) - sharpness - very effective stabilization with panning mode - not white - 67mm filter size |
negative: | - zoom ring turns the wrong way - a bit of vignetting - corners not perfectly sharp but this is rarely an issue for what I'm doing - overpriced tripod ring, get one of the knock-offs if you want one |
comment: | This replaced the SAL70400G1 when I completed my switch to E-mount. It's lighter, stabilized and has quicker AF than my old G. It's so compact that I actually prefer an L-plate over the VG on the camera. IQ is awesome, center sharpness is excellent. This works really well as a lens for field hockey or other turf sports in combination with the A7III. I have no longing for the Sony G equivalent, not worth the extra money, IMHO. |

positive: | Pros: Nice build quality Slim and light AF is quiet, fast, and accurate Good tracking Excellent image quality Nice bokeh Effective image stabilization Good close focusing Great price |
negative: | No TC options |
comment: | Just got this lens to complement my Tamron 70-180mm lens. Very impressed so far, as it weighs in at just 2 1/2 pounds!! Balances well on my Sony a7iii, perfect for hand held photography. Auto focus is quiet and accurate, and eye focus works extremely well. The image quality is outstanding, specially at the long focal length. Also impressive so far is the legendary bokeh! Hard to believe such a great lens can be had for under one grand, highly recommended. P.S.: This lens works even better and faster on my new a7iv! |
