comment: I like this lens , not only for its optical quality, but for it's versatility. You can use it for video on an A55 and use the optical lens stabilization and not have to worry about the heavy cropping of the newer bodies, or the overheating problem on the A33 & A55. Good color and sharpness.

comment:I have owned this lens for over 3 years. I have constant brilliant results. Its build quality is plastic but its solid and have used it on my previous a55 and currently on my a77. Its my favourite walk around lens and doesn't disappoint. The os feature is a bonus and IMO the lens os is better than the built in sss on both of the cameras I own. Its been back to sigma for a software update (free) when I upgraded to the a77. Its a keeper. I often toy with buying a 17-50 or 16-50 2.8 but just cant justify the extra money or loss of reach..I know i would gain some DOF advantage but the pros of this lens outweighs the cons its not as sharp as my small primes (sony 35mm 1.8) (minolta 50mm 1.7) but thats is to be expected.but stopped down its pretty good unless you pixel peep. Its wide angle at 17 has some distortion but easily fixed in lightroom...I would always recommend this lens...

Great colours, solid build.

I prefer it to the Tamron 17-50 for its longer focal length but otherwise IQ is very similar.

comment:I bought this lens new a year ago to match my new A77 and it was and still is a match made in heaven. This lens almost never comes off, except when I either need to go a lot longer or a lot wider. It is sharp, focuses fast and accurately, it is made well and handles beautifully. The only slight negative I can find on this lens, is that it has some very slight CA wide open at the wide end. But we are talking slight and the A77 removes it automatically on the in camera JPG's. Plus lightroom4 which I use removes it automatically from the RAW files. From literally thousands of shots of all types of subject it does not seem to suffer from any purple fringing or flare. At the price it is a steal and highly recommmended.

comment:It replaced kit 18-55 - main reasons sharpness, more light, AF noise / in the scope was this lens, Tamron 17-50 and CZ 16-80 - and in positives you can see what were the reasons to choose this lens. Tamron 20% cheaper but AF noisy and here is +20 mm and OS worth to spend a little bit more but still it is half of the price of CZ 16-80 - I didn't check this lens personally but I don't believe I'd have twice better snaps with CZ.
Now after almost one year usage of this lens I'm convinced it was very good investment.

positive:Fast quiet focusing. Fairly Sharp. Inexpensive for the performance. Well built.
negative:Zoom operates 'backwards' to most lenses. At wide angle setting CA shows clearly.
comment:Okay first the good points: This lens feels beautiful in use on the A77 - except its zoom action is 'backwards' to all my other lenses. It focuses very fast and extremely quietly. It fits snug on the A77. It is bright and also quite sharp throughout and at all apertures. However at extreme wide angle and wide open there is some very slight softness on the border and obvious CA at wide angle settings on the outer quarter of the image when you view at full size - and although it cleans up easily, it is a dissappointment. I think the A77's 24Mp doesn't help here, as it will magnify any slight lens error. Haven't tried it on my A100 yet - and probably never will. Overall, what a bargain for the money.
Please Note: I had to give it a 'color' rating' which to me seems ridiculous in this digital age, especially as any weird colour balance is normally down to the camera making a decision - but it seems fine so I gave it a 4.
...and as regards Flare control, well I haven't noticed any yet! - so I have given that a four also, but this may eventually be a bit premature.

comment:Purchased this about 6 months ago to be my standard walkaround lens and very happy with it so far. Considered the CZ16-80 and Tamron 17-50 but this seemed to have the best bang for buck of three and is well reviewed elsewhere.

First thing you notice is that it's a very heavy lens - this lends it a premium feel but compromises balance on a smaller body like my A200. It produces sharp, bright images with good colour (not up there with the classic Minoltas, but ok) and is very usuable in low light. If you stop it down a bit then sharpness becomes truly excellent, almost up there with my 50 1.7. At fast apertures the bokeh is also very pleasant.

The macro mode is also very useful, with the lens able to focus right up to about an inch from the lens. This makes a UV filter essential - but also very costly due the 72mm filter size.

In summary. I consider an excellent choice for a walkaround lens on an Alpha body, the CZ16-80 must be very, very good to justify costing more than twice as much.

comment:I own this lens for about a year now. First used it on my a330 and for now on my a500. I really like this lens, the range makes it a almost perfect walkaround lens. It's sharp enough for normal use, if you stop it a bit down the sharpness wil increase a lot. I also use it for architecture and landshape shots.

positive:- Sharp!
- Solid build
- HSM focusing is silent and quick
- OS useful for video
- Zoom lock
negative:- zoom ring moves in opposite direction (not really a negative, just something to get used to)
- heavy (but still not cumbersome)
comment:I wanted something to replace the 18-55 kit lens on my a55 after using it for vacation and being disappointed in the sharpness, especially when compared to pictures in the same set taken with my Tamron 70-200. I spent a lot of time comparing the Tamron 17-50, Sony 16-105 and Carl Zeiss 16-80 before finding the Sigma.

It's a perfect blend of range, speed, sharpness, and price for a walkaround lens.

positive:Sharp if stopped down a bit
Rather sharp wide open
Great bokeh
Good build quality
Can shoot macro
Comfortable size and weight
Fast, silent and accurate AF
negative:It's Sigma, you need to CHOOSE your lens carefully
Some CA at 17mm wide open, not to much tho
comment:I came to Sony from Olympus, where I used a brilliant lens - 12-60. So I began to search for something to replace it.

I tried Tamron 17-50/2.8. Did not liked it. Way too much CA near wide end, 2.8 at 17mm is the weakest point and is nearly unusable for my taste. Sold it.

I tried CZ 16-80 (borrowed it for 2 weeks). Much better then Tamron, but it's a lens that shoots best at long end of the zoom, while I use such lenses more at short end, where it's not that nice. While it costs quite a lot, I'd say too much.

Then I bought this lens. I chose my lens very carefully, Sigma has rather large variations between lens instances... I am VERY happy with mine! At f4 it has perfect picture, and can be used at 2.8 if needed, even w/o postprocessing, it has simply one of the best bokeh I've EVER seen, and I've seen many lenses, it's macro capabilities are useful, can be used at all zooms. AF is accurate, fast, reliable. All in all, a very good lens!

P.S. Works with SLT (I have A55).

comment:Great, fairly sharp lens. Good replacement for the kit 18-70, its streets ahead. Much less CA and much sharper, although stop down to f5.6 or more at the longer focal lengths. Quiet and fast focus operation, does not hunt too much in low light.

I like the in-lens optical stabilisation the image seems more stable in the view finder. Is it any better/worse than in camera stabilisation ? Not sure.

Lens weight may be a problem for some people. Vignetting not really noticeable to me.

EDIT: After a year or so of using this lens, downgraded its sharpness rating. Mainly due to the soft edges even when stopped down a bit. Wide open images are definitely on the soft side.
