compared to:Minolta AF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5
Minolta AF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5
Minolta AF 50mm f/1.7

positive:Average+ sharpness
No vignetting
Good corners
Consistent
Fast autofocus
UC lightweight

negative:Low contrast
comment:I wont use this lens with B&W film — at box speed — without the lens hood and at least a dark yellow filter for a sorely needed boost in contrast, yet I use this lens often. Veiling flare is a going concern, corner sharpness throughout the range is not.

I've no problem with 24mm focused closely on foreground interest and stopped down to f/22. It's nearly as sharp at f/22 as f/11 and not far from the Minolta 24-85mm at 24mm — but without the vignetting.

24mm barrel distortion falls in between the 24-85 and 28-105, so I won't knock it. 50mm is good but I didn't buy it for 50mm and don't think twice about swapping it for the Minolta AF 50mm f/1.7 when it's within reach.

Colors on 24MP full frame RAW files look "neutral" to a bit flat.

This Sigma 24-50mm UC takes 4th place for sharpness and contrast when compared to the above mentioned lenses, but that doesn't make it a loser. It has a different look, B&W files have plenty of vintage character with softer contrast that tends to emphasize mood and perceived shadow recovery. Consider purchasing this modest lens as an artistic tool, otherwise pass.

positive:Sharp
Colour
Very good build
Inexpensive
negative:Distortion at wide end
Flares - needs effective hood
comment:Very sharp, great colour.

Sharper than the Minolta between 35 to 50mm but obviously not as 'fast'. Very good alternative if you can live with the max aperture at the long end.
