ownership:I own this lens
compared to:Canon 24-105mm L
Sony 70-400mm
Sigma 180mm Macro
price paid:889 USD
positive:Solid Construction, good ergonomics
negative:Poor sharpness for the price bracket
comment:This lens is terribly disappointing. The sharpness is well below the standard I expect for this price range. 24mm at F22 is not even useable without significant work in photoshop. It is the last Sigma lens I will own! And worst of all it cuts off the corners at 24mm without the lens hood on.

Followup Sept 09;

I've sent this lens back for warranty servicing and they refocused it. It is still substandard in sharpness and still cuts off the corners at 24mm. For a lens marketed as professional this lens makes a mockery of Sigma. I've compared the Sigma 24-70mm at 70mm to the Sony 70-400mm lens at 70mm with both lenses two stops above wide open, the supposed sweet spot for most lenses. The Sony is sharper.
