positive: | Covers large zoom range. AF surprisingly fast using LA-EA4. |
negative: | -Heavy, bulky. -Sharpness, colours and contrast need boosting via processing from RAW. -Manual focus very coarse (could be related to using it via the LA-EA4.) |
comment: | I've owned the lens from new but have only recently revived it via an LA-EA4 on my Sony A6000. With post processing the images have turned out better than I expected (going by other reviews I read on here I had very low expectations.) I put 4 for flare control, but haven't really tested it enough to give a rating in that area. I do have the original hood for mine- which no doubt would make a big difference. |

positive: | Large focal range. |
negative: | Everything Else |
comment: | I bought this lens out of curiosity and it came attached to a Maxxum 5 film body. The 5 turned out to be great, but this lens is simply awful. Colors are washed out, build quality is absolutely terrible, slow AF, rear element seems to shift out of position at infinity focus. It might actually have some utility except for the fact of it's staggeringly large MFD. 830mm. |

positive: | Versatile Much lighter than 3 shorter range zooms or even many more primes, so also much less lens changes > less dust |
negative: | Zoom back to 28 mm before laying camera on table or in bag, I'm affraid that it's easy to damage it. No focus hold button. |
comment: | Bought it new in an Ebay shop. Mine looks different than pictures here on Dyxum, but is Sigma 28-300 3.5-6.3 Aspherical IF DL Hyperzoom. I compared it once with several other long zooms shooting freehand moon at night, also combined with one or two noname 2x TC. This was the only lens that gave acceptable results, even TC'ed to 1200 no significant shake blur and even less colored edges than I expected. Yes it does color the moon too yellow, but PaintShop can handle that. And it autofocussed relatively fast, while other lenses suffered focus hunt. No professional lens but great value for money. |

compared to: | Sony 75-300, Minolta 75/300, Minolta 200-300. |

positive: | Much the same as its sibling, little other than low cost. Several outlets have been heavily discounting the entire Sigma 28-300 remaining stock. Unfortunately I bought two of them. |
negative: | Soft at all lengths and apertures, hunts in good light, (no limit switch) basically doesn't match the Sony 300mm kits lens. |
comment: | This is yet another of the Sigma "super" zooms that fails to deliver and is being sold at very low cost through multiple outlets. It is, like my other recent purchase, being offered on eBay. I didn't pay much for it, so I imagine I should recover my costs. |

positive: | -all in one lens -large focal length range -Good AF -sharp(ish) when stepped down -built like a brick |
negative: | -Heavy! -Slow AF -Prone to camera shake at long lenghts -soft colours -lens creep -grindy manual focus |
comment: | Got this for a bargain price (Ł30) not long after i purchased a Sony a200, Initially i was quite pleased with it due to the all in one focal length and had it permanently attached to my camera for quite some time. That was until i discovered the Minolta 70-210 and the quality and sharpness blew me away. Colours are not bad, a bit washed out and sometimes have a odd yellow feel to them, but this is especially corrected in CS4, sharpness is OK when stepped down a few stops, although if you are using the full tele end, then use a tripod or you will get blur. Dont get me wrong this is a adequate lens, and have used it for a few sporting events plus had work publised off of it, howeever, it is more of a get what you pay for, and since i went to a dedicated wide angle and telephoto this has gathered dust on a shelf. |

positive: | Excellent range Decent build quality Value |
negative: | 72mm filter size Weight lens creep |
comment: | I bought this second-hand on Ebay for around Ł100, with the intention of using it as a fit-and-forget holiday lens in Sri Lanka. It did a decent enough job in the bright tropical conditions. Not great at 28 or 300mm wide open (only to be expected) but pretty sharp stopped down to f8. Unlike the Sigma 70-300mm, this lens has no macro ability, and the minimum focus distance is also relatively high. There's little to chose between the two lenses in terms of image quality, and the extra 28-70mm wide-angle range of this lens gives it the nod over the 70-300mm. Built like a tank, with a corresponding weight penalty, and the lens creeps out if you leave it hanging from your neck (which I wouldn't advise you do for any length of time, unless you're looking to build up your muscles!) All in all, if you're looking for a cheap versatile lens for general use, but aren't too bothered about pin-sharp images, then this lens is worthy of serious consideration. |

positive: | super-zoom good flare control |
negative: | slow AF |
comment: | I used it a lot with my first film camera (Minolta 404si) and I had very good results for the kind of photography that I was used to make. It's a very good lens if you shoot mainly fast snaps, a good tool for your memories. On film it has a very noticeable vignetting WA. The good thing with APS sensor is that vignetting is completely gone. AF is slow and it's impossible to catch moving subjects, but it's OK if you shoot mainly landscapes or static things. Sharpness is good to very good on normal prints. Shooting with digital camera, it's easy to see how soft are the images, even if are still acceptable. Overall it is not a bad lens. It's a super-zoom, it means that with one lens you cover all your needs. It's good choice if you are tight on budget and you want to develop your composition skills. |

comment: | I have used this lens for some years now.It and the Sigma 17-35/2.80-4, have usually been the only 2 lenses I have taken on overseas trips (plus the AF 100 macro for local.) Both give superb photos, all on fuji film, 200-400 asa - I don't think I've been disappointed yet. The next trip, Spain & Morocco will be using the 7D and my new Sony 11-18. IMO the 28-300 means a lot less lens changes, especially important with digital in dusty areas. The ability to change ISO on the 7D makes it even more adaptable. Can't say I've been that aware of flare or distortion, but guess it is there somewhere. |
