compared to:Minolta 28-135mm 4-4.5
price paid:USD239.00 (Used)
positive:Price is definitely a positive.
Stopped down it has very good image quality.
negative:Too slow, at its best apertures.
comment:I think having had the Minolta 28-135mm 4-4.5 before this lens, gave me a very high bar to measure this lens by. The particular 28-135mm I owned was incredibly sharp, right from f4. So while it was sort of slow at that aperture, it was perfectly usable at that aperture.

This Sigma on the other hand was really only useful in bright day light, with ISO speeds that keep the aperture in its prime range, between f7-8 to f13. Again, my expectations were probably far too high when I bought this lens.

As for colour rating, I really don't know. Any review I post, I give a 5; 99% of my shooting is black and white film, so I just don't know.

comment:Good at 2.8 and very sharp stopped down. Low CA and low distortion. Better bokeh than the 24-85. Better CA correction than the 28-135.
In low light conditions very good at 2.8 at all focal lengths. In bright
light softer (at 70mm).

Changed sharpness rating to 4.5 after a compare with the Tamron

comment:A very solid lens. Not much to say about is.
May be not as beautiful colors as the Minolta 100-300 but very close (I would give it a 4.5 but the system don´t allow that and it is below that lens)

positive:Sharpness, build quality, price

comment:Compared to the 28-75, it feels a bit more solid. When it comes to sharpness, they are very similar. Both are very sharp stopped down, and produce usable images wide open. The Sigma is a bit heavy for my 5D, which knocks the combo slightly out of balance.

F2.8 performance:
At 28 mm the Sigma is excellent, noticeably better than the KM, while the latter is better on the tele side. The Sigma stays really impressive all the way through 50 mm, but at 60-70 mm, it becomes less brilliant. The 70 mm 2.8 shots will require some post processing if you want to make large prints, but given the price, that is a pretty reasonable compromise in my opinion.

F8 performance:
Very good. I don’t imagine you can get more detail out of a 6 mp sensor.

positive:Sturdy, well built lens. Sharp at f/2.8 at longest range. Reasonably priced.
negative:A bit soft wide open at 28mm, some flare.
comment:Originally bought for my 700si, but has followed into the digital era. It's a good low-budget lens, which delivers nice colours and overall good sharpness. Especially on the long range, which makes it a nice portrait lens on the 7D.

positive:Fast accurate focus
Surprisingly sharp
Depth-of-field scale
Stiff but exact zoom ring
Among the lightest in this range
negative:MF/AF manual clutch in addition to the camera's switch
Some flaring
Maybe a bit softer wide open
comment:This is now my everyday lens on my 5D, I got it in excellent condition second hand. I have shot some beautiful available light pictures with it, and having a constant f/2.8 also makes the viewfinder wonderfully bright under low light conditions.

I got it cheap, and have seen it sold quite cheaply, which makes it a real bargain. Grab one if you can!

positive:Very fast focus, very sharp, great colour and little distortion
negative:Stiff zoom control, does not disengage to manual focus using just the AF/MF button on back of 7D
comment:I bought this lens second hand but in top condition, having an F2.8 28-70 on the 7D makes it a very good zoomable standard and portrait lens (42-105 equiv), I would highly recommend this lens even with the stiff zoom control
