positive: | sharpness, compact size, aspherical lens, metal construction, good picture quality... |
negative: | zen coating, hood attachment is stiff, lens-coating from the 80's-90's, not 100% compatible with SLT cameras (in camera focus-limiter and flash compatibility in AF don't work properly). |
comment: | Actually, I always kept an eye on the "Minolta AF 28/2" until I accidentally bought this lens on eBay for € 60 as new from a dealer on the Canary Islands without any great expectations, I was just curious what I get for 60 € ...? The more positive I am impressed by the imaging properties, the sharpness is above average for a lens of the price range with year of construction 1991, so I give "5" in the rating. Newer lenses are of course sometimes better in sharpness. I completely / professionally removed the zen coating, underneath is a shiny black metal body. Without ever having it, I think the Sigma is no worse than the "Minolta AF 28/2" and the sharpness is better, I would put it on the same level as the "Minolta AF 35/2". This is a keeper and seems underrated ... |

comment: | I am not sure why this nice little lens was replaced by the much larger EX DG lens in 2004. The light weight version that came between these looks identical to this lens other than the removal of the distance window. The focus throw and minimum focus distance are the same as the Minolta/Sony 28mm primes. This lens is much sharper than any of the Minolta 28 F2's I've tried or the Canon 28 F1.8. The Sony FE 28 F2 is just as bright as this lens and other than barrel distortion has less optical issues. |

comment: | Honestly, I was not expecting this sharpness and speed when focusing. I was very pleasantly surprised. I recommend this lens without hesitation. In FF it is a wide focal, and with that opening it is a good ally for nocturnes; In APSC, 28mm are more than enough for a good portrait with atmosphere. comment: | Probably the only defect of the lens is flare control, however, is made in 1990 :) |

positive: | sharp & old Minolta color relatively fast aperture close focus under a foot accurate, quick and quiet AF solid build |
negative: | Zen finish |
comment: | Nice old lens. All metal construction, sharp, color much like old Minolta, close focus under a foot. Accurate, fast & quiet AF, works fine on A65 and with LA-EA4. Zen finish on this copy was mostly removed. That left a plain gloss black barrel with covered depth of field scale that looks a lot like earlier Minolta lenses. It is about the size of the Minolta 28 f2 when extended, but with a wider, actually usable, focus ring. Works nicely as a fast short normal prime on APS-C, it handles a lot like the Minolta 50mm f1.7 does on FF. I like the warmer color better than that of the newer Sigma 24mm f1.8 EX DG, YMMV. Several reviews of the LW Aspherical ZEN (aka II) version are of this earlier lens. The somewhat newer version has the scale printed on the barrel. |
