positive:Pretty sharp from f4 onwards.
fast focussing for such an old lens.
negative:horrible placement of the 'non' removable collar, and the material choice there of.
not whether sealed. (strange for an 300mm outdoor lens)
hunting Performance on the LA-EA4 compared to the sony a58, a68 and a maxum 5. on the stated camera's it is considerably faster than the la-ea4.
comment:this lens was bought second hand with a defect. it was stated (not on the pictures) that the lens had a somewhat white ''glare'' on the inside, and that the auto focus wasn't as smooth as it is supposed to be. so i bought it and to my surprise the lens was almost non see thru!

despite that and not having the option of returning the lens i upend the lens up and started cleaning the lenses i could reach. trying to clean the lens elements with just normal cleaning suplements wasn't working great but i noticed some of the matt white finish came off. it couldn't get it all off so i brought a Stenly knife to the repair and it was much easier. i could just scarpe off the matt white stuf (which i think is the lens coating which had dried up or something). after reassembling the lens with the 'almost' clear optics, the newly greases up focus assembly and gears i attached the lens to my camera and it works like a charm. some adjusting of parts was necessary but in the end it works like it was supposed to do. however, since i got rid of the lens coatings the lens does show some CA. But i think for a lens with this age and no / almost no coatings, it works quite well. (don't know if the front element has coatings, since i didn't remove them :) )

the only thing i don't get is how this lens is so soft wide open. i looks like it has some kind of haze filter over it up to around F3.2. above f3.2 the lens becomes quite sharp.

positive:Fast lens due to F/2.8 Aperture
negative:Not a high speed focus motor, Noisy focusing, most pictures I shots have some softness, not sharp as expected, beside it is a heavy enough lens to get your hand some pain in short time if handling (so you need a tripod or mono pod for sure), focus ring is small and about only 110 degrees rotaition, so it's not good for manual precise focusing, the autofocus sometimes is out of the target a little bit for most of your shots., that makes it a good for none movable thigs so you can take your time manual focusing till you get the best focus.
comment:I do a hard search to get this lens, I found it in japan as a rare and like new condition, once I receive it I discover it has some problem in the elements and need a service, so it is not recommended as old lens, The only good thing of this lens is the aperture 2.8 open, otherwise it will not makes you satisfy.
I try to disassemble this lens to clean or replace the bad elements, but I reach a point where I can't go further, the elements get stuck and refuse to get off, so I just clean what I can reach, then combine it back., I do my best and it works as it was at released time.

positive:Shock on how Sharp it was
negative:Hunts in dark settings
Can be heavy
comment:I too a stab in the dark with this lens in all black for 300 in good shape. The optics are great the and the barrel was scuffed up and no drop in filters. There was a nice dent in the lens hood so I order a Lens hood off newer version. With a minor modifcation it was on in no time. Much better flare control... Workes great! Focus can hunt but if I can find a high contrast area it will lock on very quickly and stay. If you come across one of these, I would highly recommend you get one.

positive:massive lens and great image quality
sharp from f3,5
negative:focusring a liitle too small for my hands
comment:i bought this lens used from forum. i recieved a green/mint colored lens with 3 filters, extra hood, and heliopan circ. pol filter for front.
the adaptive hood is very useful, because of the small and rather useless built in hood.
image quality is very good. 2,8 might be a little soft, but from 3,5 to 4 as its best.
i highly recomment this tank!
focus is for this old lens very very fast, even badlight in theater.
distortion better than rated 5*

positive:Very well built, massive lens, with a good picture quality.
negative:By F2.8 a little bit soft (especially the corners).
comment:Very massive lens with a good picture quality. Not too heavy, you can make handheld photos with the AS, certainly it's easier to use it from a tripod (unless you are a combination of a bodybuilder and a sharpshooter). The hood could be longer, and it would be good, if you could fix it. With a 2x teleconverter, the picture quality is still acceptable, just enough for an acceptable A/3 or a very nice 20x30 print. All in all, it's not a bad lens, finely usable for great photos, but it's far from the 200/2.8 G.
