positive: | + Cosmetic: — Jet Black, seamless transition from lens to camera — Ultra hard Plastic and metal build — Big. It's big and heavy, enough to intimidate pro shooters with G Master lenses — beautiful blueish green coating — zoom ring on the front, aiding for more stabilization + Performance - Autofocus with closed diaphragm — Beast mode image stabilization, panning shots are cheating — Lightning fast autofocus even down to -4EV — Audible and noticeable rattles, tells the lens is working — Manual aperture is smooth and seamless. — Sharp. Very sharp. — Late 2024 batch Sigma DG DN sports 70-200: parfocal and latches on subject while moving zoom. Coatings are greenish blue, similar to those on Minolta HS APO lenses, instead of the dull wine and purplish green coating from the first variants |
negative: | — Cosmetic - Black. I'm too snob and I feel like I wanted at least two of my three lenses to be white, cannot be. - Made of plastic, you can feel the difference in cold when touching from the tripod collar to the mount and From rhe collar to the front element - front glass element is small, there is way too much extra plastic - Zoom ring is stiff - tripod mount looks weird and can't be released, you have to unmount it and the amputee will look bad. - Flat found hood, I prefer petal hoods. —Performance - Stabilizer might not always deliver. It hesitates in panning mode. - Too sharp and dull, zero imperfections that make subjects pop off the frame - slow diaphragm - zoom ring too stiff and noisy |
comment: | Tested on A7IV (33 mp/14mp crop) This lens is a beast, however the colors look slightly more boring than those on minolta 80-200 g hs apo. The autofocus is quick and responsive. But it is not fully metal and there is wasted chance to make the filters go 72mm because the front element is indeed barely smaller than that of the 80-200. The G Master 70-200 is not as sharp, it doesn't get the autofocus signal as fast but it still holds up and seems to be more future proof. Sigma DG DN 70-200 is a fully electronic lens where the only manual control is the zoom. The G Master II is probably miles ahead this lens, but I'm still very pleased. |
