comment:A very clean copy with both original lens caps and optional Sony hood purchased on eBay. I also bought the matching VCLECF1 0.62x (10 mm) Fisheye Converter for $44 and then I found the Sony VCL-ECU1 0.75x (12 mm) Ultra Wide Converter for $28. So, around $200 for 3 ultra wide focal lengths. I purchased a second copy of the lens for $149 which was much worse than the first. I purchased a third open-box copy that was more even in the corners but not as sharp wide-open. "MADE IN THAILAND"

Looking at other reviewers ratings I am not sure if I am rather lucky with this copy or unlucky. It is very sharp wide-open in the center, but there is obviously some extra horizontal smearing on the right side that doesn't clear up until the lens is focused out an extra 0.25m or so. The other two copies are not sharp wide-open. As far as distortion and focus plane flatness it is the polar opposite of the 16-50PZ kit lens at 16 mm.

This lens is wider in the center of the frame than the short end of the 16-50PZ with none of the extreme barrel distortion of that lens. It is much wider after lens distortion corrections are applied. There is some moderate pincushion distortion mostly confined to the corners. It has less distortion than any other 16 mm lens I've tried so far. It has less distortion than the 20mm F2.8 pancake.

Sharpness outside the center half of the frame is weak--weaker than any of the SLR zooms at 16 mm. There is fairly strong lateral CA toward the edges of the frame also worse than the SLR zooms. There is a great deal of corner shading that seems to be partially compensated in the raw files.

The used, open-box, and refurbished E mount lens market is full of poor copies of lenses.

The Samyang AF 24mm F2.8 is twice the length of this lens but offers more than twice the light on full-frame and better sharpness across the larger frame.

Get the fish eye adapter from sony! It opens up a whole new world of usage for this lens.

comment:Wasn't the biggest fan of this lens by itself and have used it on three bodies so far, a Nex-3, Nex-F3, now an A6000. I liked it best on the a6000 so far, and I loved it with the fish eye!

comment:Best point on this lens: It's a very small pancake lens, let's your NEX fit into your pocket like a compact camera.
It was my always-carry-around lens, I will sell it because I will upgrade to Sony A7.
IQ is okay, but nothing breathtaking.
Center is always good, but it shows some vignetting and distortion in the corners, but there's nothing better on the market in terms of size. Even Sigma 19/2.8 and Voigtländer 15/4.5 are much bigger.

comment:Unfairly maligned lens.
It's easy to think a 24mm equivalent field of view is a landscape lens, but this is a snapshot lens. The elements are smaller than my pinkie fingernail - for glass that is the size of a cell phone glass this lens produces fabulous images.
Obviously the corners are mushy, that's the tradeoff for small, light, and inexpensive.
Use this lens if you need a 2.8 lens that fits in your pocket that you can use for indoor pictures or walkaround scenics, or if most of your pictures have the subject in the center.
If you put the subject in the corner, or if you want a landscape lens, or if you want to replace the Minolta 20/2.8 with a nex, do not use this lens.
Highly recommended, with reservations.
