comment:This lens has replaced my Sony 70-300g from which I was a bit disappointed. While both have a similar performance until about 120mm the 70-400g is significantly sharper from there on. It almost reaches the level of the Minolta 200 2.8 HS on 200mm and it has similar sharpness as the Minolta 300 2.8 but without the CAs of that great lens.
My copy needs quite some micro-adjustment to get tack sharp and I suspect that reviews with low sharpness ratings are partially a result of similar issues.
The colour reproduction is neutral and not as saturated as the old Minoltas, the Bokeh tends to be busy.
