ownership:I own this lens
compared to:18 - 55 kit lens
price paid:150 USD new
positive:Fast, Light, and inexpensive.
Great portrait lens.
Small size.
Recessed front element.
negative:Plastic build
comment:I really like this lens! It is very sharp after it has been stopped down to f/2.8. Wide open is very soft with lots of CA. The DoF is tiny at 1.8, so much care is needed when focusing, but that's just physics! Stopped down and this lens is right up there.
I've had pretty good success with hand-held portraits by fire and candle light.
Build is plastic from China. For the price, that's just the way it's going to be. Quality seems fine. Focus is fast and sure. This lens should hold up well to non-pro use.
