ownership:I own this lens
compared to:Really can only compare it to Minolta's 100/2.8 macro and the 80/200g but blows them both away.
price paid:1500(new)
positive:Unbelievably good in every aspect. A lens razor sharp at 1.8!, nice contrasty colors, build quality, speedy focus especially when considering the precision required! Build quality is great. Easily the best (maybe not the most utilized) lens in the A-Mount line up. Great film look for motion too. a99 nailed follow focus for me!
negative:Heavy, Green blob with high overhead sunlight is less transparent than I'd like, a little more aberration than I'd expect from a lens this refined- seems like everything else is as good at it could be without a trade off- but the aberration appears to be that surprising trade off to me. (surprising when you consider how well other zeiss pieces handle this) The DOF is so shallow WO that any image that's slightly off axis shot can make the image look distorted to the unfamiliar. This is especially true on APSC.
comment:Worth every penny for the pro- the best in the class among all manufacturer. Head and shoulders above every lens that I've used from any manuf. Makes a very sought after look for motion pictures too!
