ownership:I own this lens
compared to:- Canon 24-70mm 2.8 L (Mk I) - definitely better
- Minolta 35-70mm - in different leagues
price paid:$2000 (new)
positive:+ Beautiful color rendition and saturation
+ Excellent build-quality, durability
+ Compared to original Canon 24-70mm 2.8: Superior sharpness, contrast, color, durability / slightly less close focusing ability (2cm)
+ Light-weight, metal petal lens hood
+ SSM is quiet and can be fast (when the a99 AF system cooperates)
negative:- High Price
- Slightly excessive distortion from 24mm to approx. 30mm, particularly in the corners
- Internal zoom would be nice (like Canon 24-70 Mark II) considering the size & weight
- Sharpness wide open could be slightly better (great from f3.5, razor sharp at f8)
- Size & weight make it a commitment when using it for general walkabout shooting
comment:It is the best standard zoom currently available for a-mount and possibly the best 24-70mm lens overall (the new Canon 24-70mm mark II may edge it out, but lacks the stabilization that a-mount cameras provide).
