ownership:I own this lens
compared to:Minolta 24-105/3.5-4.5 D
price paid:NZ$795 (US$520 used)
positive:A very versatile lens, constant f/2.8 across the zoom range, lovely colours and rendering, SSM focusing is fast, minimal distortion, most aberrations are well controlled, as sharp as some of my primes, solidly built
negative:SSM is fast but *not* as fast as some of my screw drive Minolta lenses, quite heavy, AF-D isn't quite what I hoped for
comment:Bought from a local 2nd hand dealer - I was told before buying that it had some dust and stuff on internal elements - externally it is a bit beat up (the blue paint on the Zeiss logo was rubbed off so I re-coloured it with a blue permanent marker, lol). Optically it is 99% fine thankfully. It is proving to be a versatile albeit heavy walkabout lens, with lovely sharp rendering and lovely colours, and good flare control. I will probably get a service to clean internal elements as I can see a blob of gunk near the edge of the image circle on the 2nd element from the front (if I stop down to f/16 at 24mm and near minimum focus distance I can see a fuzzy faint blob in that location). Otherwise it is working admirably - a bona fide bargain considering other SAL2470Z's for sale in New Zealand are around NZ$2000 for used, and over NZ$3000 for new.
