ownership:I own this lens
compared to:Sony Carl Zeiss Planar T* 85mm F1.4 ZA SSM
Sony SAL50F14
price paid:AU$1,200 as new
positive:Solid build, well balanced on camera body, fast and silent SSM focus, superb image quality, weather proof.
negative:Plastic hood (the comparable Zeiss Planar 85mm has a metal one).
comment:More solid and heavier than the Sony 50mm f1.4, more comparable to the Carl Zeiss 85mm f1.4 in look and feel.
A professional quality, weatherproof lens that gets the most out of high resolution sensors, particularly full frame.
Exceptional level of detail, buttery smooth Bokeh, natural colour rendition, weatherproof, precise controls, quick, sure and silent SSM focus with direct manual focus always available. Expensive and much bulkier than the Sony 50mm f1.4 (virtually unchanged optically from Minolta versions going back to 1985), but feels very well balanced on the camera body and will certainly match, enhance and optimise the capabilities of today's high resolution sensors as well as those yet to be released.
