ownership:I own this lens
compared to:Canon EF 100-400 L IS II
Sony SAL 70-400 G2
price paid:USD 2770
positive:Very sharp, even with SEL20TC is still sharp enough
AF fast, especially with A9, it able to AF-C at f11 and provide 20 fps
negative:The loose-tight control ring at tight is not completely lock the zoom. Perhaps it is a design feature
comment:It is the longest tele lens in Sony E mount now, so it is a must when trying to make use of the A9's 20 fps with AF-C for tracking for shooting birds and wild life. I have both the 1.4X and 2X and they works fine for them on A9, A7rII and A6500 too, although AF speed is slightly less with A7rII and A6500. I tried to drive the ultimate image quality of this lens by using A7rII + 2X TC + FE100-400 at 400mm which give effective focal length of 800, while the 42M resolution provide a 1.32X factor compare to normal 24M sensor, i.e. could be same as 1056mm focal length on 24M sensor, the image quality is still very good at f16 ( if not step down, i.e. using f11, the contrast will be a less). Also keep to use silent shutter on the A7rII as the shutter vibration will hurt the IQ with testing, as f16 need lower speed to maintain in low ISO for testing.
