ownership:I own this lens
compared to:Sony FE 100-400mm GM
Sony 70-400mm G
price paid:£1619 (new)
positive:Sharp
Great range
Good AF
Internal zoom
negative:Large (thanks to internal zoom)
not f5.6 (I guess I'd be even larger)
wide end not wide enough "only" 200mm (I guess that might have also made it larger)
comment:I have had this lens since release and its really one of the best telephoto lenses I have owned. It's as sharp as any other telephoto zooms of its kind inc. 100-400mm if not sharper. The AF is certainly very good especially at tracking. Lock-on speed is ever so slightly slower than the 100-400GM but not bad at all. But AF and sharpness is definitely better 100-400+1.4x.
I wish it starter at 100mm or even better 60mm like the sigma 60-600mm Sport lens. But I'd only rarely use it at that end so not a huge issue. Its at 600mm 98% of the time!

the 100-400mm+1.4x didn't see much loss in IQ. Cannot say the same for this. I notice some loss in IQ and definitely so with 2x converter.
