comment: | This is the second least expensive Sony FE lens after the FE 1.8/50. It is nearly twice the price of that lens. The retail price has been $450 since introduction with frequent $25 discounts and a couple of $50 discounts. It has a similar allow veneer and control ring as the older primes. "Made in Thailand" I bid too much on an auction for a like-new copy with the original packaging. A $200 "refurbished" copy had worse alignment. A third used copy with original packaging was slightly better aligned. Every copy has had a noticeable amount of misalignment. Image quality stopped down is better than the Sony FE 28-70, 24-70 ZA, and 24-105 G zooms. Outside of alignment, the main optical flaws are distortion and chromatic aberrations. It has more barrel distortion than the other 28mm primes. Distortion compensation is applied to the live-view and cannot be disabled on the A7II, A7RII, and A7III. The distortion compensation can be disabled on the A6000. It has more lateral CA than the Canon EF 28mm F2.8 IS USM. It is as bright wide-open as the older Sigma and Canon 28 F1.8 primes despite those lenses being larger and heavier. The Sony also has less purple fringing. It is decent as an APS-C lens, but there are sharper, smaller APS-C primes. It also lacks optical stabilization which would be useful for this normal angle-of-view on APS-C. Canon's 28mm F2.8 has image stabilization. It does look fancier than the plastic bodied FE 50 F1.8. It is not as pleasant to touch. It shares the plastic petal ALC-SH112 hood with the 18-55 OSS kit lens. The filter threads and front of the lens are plastic. The dedicated Ultra Wide Converter attaches via the hood bayonet. The optical flaws of the base lens remain issues using the converter. The Tamron 20mm F2.8 has much better image quality and is also lighter the converter by itself. Overall a nice prime if you find a well-aligned example. |

comment: | Very good contrast, well balance in A7ii & A6000. Best to carry out for street photography and indoor low light shooting. |

positive: | small size + auto focus sharp like a very good kit lens just not slow f/3,5 but with f/2 character |
negative: | Made from losts plastic; will this lens work as good/at all like my (now)40+ year old vintage lenses in 2050? Software driven: manual focus by 'wire' not pleasent with MF focus Distortion on FF sensor; not a strong lens for Architecture shots. |
comment: | This lens fits perfectly on the A7 series, all together a very compact 'just one lens set-up' to take anywhere. The lens is centre sharp , but not same level sharp cross-frame stopping down as as the sony FE2.8/35. Strong character in pictures with plenty of room for PP, if you dont't mind using adjustments in Lightroom, needed for lensprofile in RAW. (Jpeg is automaticly ajusted in camera, RAW not so) I like the bokeh of my CZ2/24ZA better at f/2, but the FE2/28 is not far behind and has much less distortion and much smaller size. Flare is well controlled, no T* coating like the Loxia or FE2.8/35 but close enough (rating should be 4,5). Plastic fantastic. My choice was between a secondhand CZ 2/28 distagon ZF with Nikon mount or Sony FE 2/28. Size and autofocus for video made me pick the Sony. Also the lens preforms excellent on my A6000 if you like 42mm prime Bargain lens. No brainer if your looking for a prime lens with this focal lenght and do not mind the distortion (on FF). update- on the A7iii body the Eye-AF works very good with this lens. With some crop this lens makes nice portraits! |

positive: | Light , bright and tight. Sharp, colourful and contrasty. Very very good value. Well made. |
negative: | Flare and fringing and distortion issues if I am being mean, but at this price you really cannot complain. |
comment: | Great lens at a great price and a great investment. Use it on all NEX and a6000 derivatives as well as A7 series. I recommended it whole heartedly as a general walk around, a wide angle and a street lens. |

positive: | Very sharp from f2.8 across the frame, center sharp at f2. Nice colors. Fast AF. (This lens opens upp to f2 when focusing on my a7RII with FW 3.20) Cheap and great performance compared to other Sony lenses. Great flare control. Small and nice all over. |
negative: | Pronounced barrel distortion uncorrected. |
comment: | Bought it for landscape and movie-shooting. Live view on the a7RII shows the corrected image so very nice when aligning against buildings etc. |

positive: | - Sharp across the frame, especially in the center. - Neutral color rendition. - Fast and accurate autofocus. |
negative: | - Pronounced barrel distortion. Easily corrected with the lens profile in Lightroom. |
comment: | This lens currently lives on my A6000. I bought it because I plan to get an A7 II this year. On the A6000, it performs flawlessly. I'm finding that the only time I change lenses now is to mount a longer lens for portraits. |

comment: | Small, fast focusing, very sharp and cheap. While I've rated distortion as a 2 that's irrelevant as it's designed to be software corrected. |

positive: | Excellent sharpness in the center with an open, nice bokeh, small size and good workmanship housing. |
negative: | Strong barrel uneven sharpness in the corners wide open (upper corners are good, the bottom corners disgusting) |
comment: | Excellent all-purpose lens with the possibility of creative shooting, but with some problems of production. Here is my review of the lens with photos: http://in-windows.livejournal.com/101584.html |
