ownership:I own this lens
compared to:SAL 70-300 G
price paid:$2798
positive:Everything
negative:None so far, but I must say that the inner surface of the lens hood tends to gather dust (not a major problem, easy to solve the issue).
comment:Sharpness is superb on all the zoom range, even when coupled with the TC x1.4
Color rendition is great.
As for build, well I've "managed" to roll the camera and drop from the car seat quite a few times (and didn't learn yet to fix the camera more) with no damage. So learn from my experience and do not "replicate my trials".
No distortion at all.
In some very rare situation I managed to get a small flare (tiny blueish bleb) without ruining the shot. And no color cast or "voile" whatsoever.
AF is extremely quick.
Best aperture setting is from f/4.0 to f/7.1, though at 2.8 at the focus point you still have extreme sharpness.
Weight wise, it's not heavy and despite my own weight I didn't have any trouble carrying it even all day (intermittently).
While focusing or zooming the lens doesn't extend.
This lens is a gem, I don't think it's overpriced. A must have for all photographers.

compared to:Sony a-mount SAL 70-200mm f2.8 SSM G2.
price paid:AU$2,600.00 as new
positive:Build quality, optical quality, very fast and responsive auto-focussing, 3 selectable modes of optical steady shot, weather sealing, lighter that previous versions, comprehensive range of on lens controls including focal range, switchable direct manual focus, and a dedicated aperture ring that can be turned off via the iris lock.
negative:Full retail price.
comment:Remarkable evolutionary advance over its a-mount and e-mount predecessors in terms of its reduced weight, the XD linear motors are 4 times faster to respond and lock autofocus than the previous model, lots of dedicated switches to set things up perfectly to match subject and occasion. Exceptionally sharp, fast response, relatively light for its type. Beautiful Image Quality, constant aperture through its zoom range. Removable tripod mount. Highly recommended.
