positive:Sharp wide open at all focal lengths all the way to and including 200mm. Sharp across the frame. Amazing resolution. Low distortion.
Works without noticeable difference with the dedicated 1.4x converter
negative:Not as quiet as you would expect. Price. Plastic filter thread, are you serious SONY?
comment:Amazing resolution, beautiful rendition, sharp everywhere all the way from 70mm to 200mm and therefore it should be my dream events lens, but it is noisy. It is the loudest lens that I currently own.
99.9% of the time that is not a problem, but when you are getting that crucial shot, in a quiet phrase, during a performance it can make you wince a little. But not as much as the other photographers around you who have mirrors flapping about like demented mechanical bees! So it's all good. Highly recommended.
UPDATE. I have now tested it with the 1.4x converter and it remains wonderfully sharp with amazing resolution and with no noticeable effect on AF. Also recommended.

compared to:AF 4/70-210 (beercan)
FE 4/70-200 G OSS
Nikon 4/70-200 (current gen at time of writing)
price paid:USD 2600 (New)
positive:+Insanely good bokeh when close-focused.
+lightning-fast focus.
+closest MFD amount similar lenses, from any make.
+compatibility with FE Teleconverters.
+Parfocal design
negative:-Price. It's $500 more than similar lenses from competitors.
-considerably heavier than the F4 precursor, but still not absurd at 1.4kg
comment:I really love this lens. I have spent a little time comparing to to the other 70-200-ish options available to us. Also, I've compared it against other incompatible but similar setups from Canon and Nikon.

So impressed with this lens.

EDIT: It's been over a year, and I'm surprised no one else has reviewed this lens yet.
