positive:In all ways a professional lens. Love the aperture-ring on it.
negative:Too big, and too heavy using hand held. Very expensive.
comment:This is a professional lens, perfect for portraits.
IMHO it's too heavy using handheld, but I'm glad Sony makes this kind of professional lenses.
I like the bokeh that this lens produces more than the bokeh of the Zeiss lenses, but that will be very personal.

price paid:US $ 1600 (open box)
positive:Crazy Sharp, perfect bokeh
negative:Little noisy (doesnt bother me), heavy, not the fastest AF
comment:So far, this is the best lens I have ever owned, only followed very close by Zeiss 35 1.4 (E moount).
Until now, no lens could challenge STF Bokeh, but believe me this is a lot better, is perfectly rounded, is almost unreal. I'm a prime guy, but now I'm thinking on the 70-200 GM due to the perfection of this 85.
Some reviews says that is soft at 1.4, my copy is not, but be aware of its shallow depth of field, if you are too close to your subject you will get only a few eyelashes on focus.
Transtion between focus and out focus areas are incredibly smooth.
If you are a portrait photographer this lens is a MUST, but this incredible results comes with a price, AF is not crazy fast and its heavy, but believe me its worthy.
If weight and fast AF are a key point for you, then the Batis could be a better option, if not go for the GM.

positive:Very well built, outstanding IQ, aperture ring (de-clickable).
sharpness across the frame is perfect, the quality of the bokeh keeps what they promised - carefully applied it is smooth like silk.
negative:Focussing (either AF or MF) makes very loud strange noise. I call it "Darth Vader's lens" - seems funny, is not. Although I love the lenses' outstanding IQ, this noise makes me consider swapping back to the Batis.
comment:I am aware of the sometimes hard fates of early adopters, however I did not expect this issue related to noise. In fact the Planar (SAL Sony-Zeiss) was louder due to the screw-driven AF, but that was a different noise one accepted the lens to have. The GM's noise is terrible in comparison.
It is a pitty for the in every other aspect perfect 85mm.
