ownership:I own this lens
compared to:Sony Carl Zeiss 16-35mm f2.8 ZA Vario-Sonnar.
price paid:AU$1,225.00
positive:Very compact, lightweight, excellent image quality, fine build quality with good weather sealing, plenty of easy to use controls on the lens body, or can all be done from camera settings. As a stills photographer the power zoom hasn't been used, but the manual zoom ring quickly sets the focal length. A real pleasure to use, and the results are absolutely up with the very much bigger, heavier lenses covering the same range at f2.8. Haven't really missed having that extra aperture in use.
negative:Rather shallow petal lens hood allows sun penetration in some situations, but that's par for the course with this wide zoom range.
comment:A permanent and regularly used part of my camera kit.
Highly recommended without reservation.

compared to:Lots of older lenses
price paid:1000 USD
positive:Sharpness, size, price, good flare resistance, power zoom
negative:Lots of distortion (which bodies correct), no OIS, power zoom, only f/4
comment:This is a lens that takes perfect advantage of accepting easy-to-correct barrel distortion for otherwise spectacular optical performance. Without correction, distortion is honestly unacceptable at 16mm; however, correction is automatic and the side-effect is just a little reduction in resolution -- which is negligible for high-res bodies, but perhaps not for 24MP FF and lower-resolution APS-C bodies. The lack of OIS similarly makes it appropriate only for bodies with IBIS. Then there is also the video-oriented power zoom and manual-focus-by-wire; I normally hate that, but this lens does it silently, quickly, and very predictably... so it didn't bother me. In sum, this is a great lens for the 30MP+ FF Sonys.

price paid:1.399 €
positive:Power zoom mechanism, internal zoom and focusing, weight an size, nice sunstars, lots of controls, weather sealed, very sharp, usefull MFD
negative:Build rating = 4 because no OSS, flare control can be a problem (as with all wide-angle lenses actually), minor softness at the corners
comment:The lack of OSS is not a problem on the A7C and A6600. The most important advantage is the internal function of focusing and zoom in a compact body. The max. magnification of 0.23x leaves room for creativity. For me, the ideal WW-zoom for travel.

Highly recommended for both FF and APS-C!
