comment: | This was another completed Greentoe offer. Tamron currently has a $50 instant savings promotion. This has a more limited zoom range than most wide zooms except for 24-35mm zooms. I would still like a better much wider lens eventually. I happily sold my Tamron SP 17-35mm F2.8-4 Di the day after this lens arrived. Tamron's current 17-35mm F2.8-4 OSD for SLRs is slightly less expensive. "MADE IN VIETNAM" The rear rubber mount gasket requires a good amount of effort to mount the lens. The rear housing looks identical to those on the Tamron OSD primes which are similar to the Sony FE 1.8/50. The lens handles nicely. It looks skinny and long for an ultrawide. The focus control is in the rear of the lens in the same position as their OSD primes. The other two RXD zooms also have their focus controls in the back, but they are located further forward. The front and rear elements move in opposite directions to zoom. They are fully extended at 17 mm and most retracted near 28 mm. The zoom action is somewhat heavy but very smooth and consistent. This copy has a alignment issue causing extra lateral CA on the right side of images. It is also not quite as sharp at the long end. It has a somewhat cool color cast. The image quality is competitive with the 18, 24, and 28 mm primes. The wide end doesn't seem to be any wider than the Samyang 18mm F2.8. The narrow end is narrower than the FE 2/28. The included HA046 bayonet petal hood is very similar but slightly deeper than the HF050 hood from the 20 and 24 mm primes and doesn't vignette when used on those lenses. |
