price paid:21 USD (used)
positive:It zooms and focuses
negative:Worst image quality
Very cheap feeling
No distance encoder
comment:Other than some wear on the hood this copy is very clean. Silver 271D "MADE IN JAPAN"

The image quality is bad at the wide end and horrible at the long end and not good anywhere in between. Stopping down to f/8 doesn't really help. The directional glow at high contrast edges indicates an alignment problem.

positive:Distortion is surprisingly well controlled. Focus is fast and relatively accurate.
negative:Soft wide open. Acceptable at f8. Noticeable vignetting up to and including 50mm.
comment: I have never been a fan of super zoom lenses and this one has not changed my opinion. They just have too many compromises. I was pleasantly surprised by the distortion control of this lens. It's there, of course, at 28mm but well within reason and correctable.
The colors are quite neutral. Pretty much as you see them. CA (purple fringing) is noticeable at 100% but not much worse than expected. Correctable in PP.
The softness wide open may be a plus for outdoor portraiture but that isn't enough to recommend this lens. It was part of a $65 package deal that included a Min. 35-70 f4 and a Min. 28mm f2.8 prime. The Tam will go to EB and I will have the others essentially free.
