positive: | Good build quality. Very sharp, fast autofocus, good weather sealing. Focal range is excellent, the additional 50mm at the short end makes this a one lens solution for all but wide. Good closeup with a 1:2 magnification from 50-70mm. Excellent size for the focal range. Stays sharp with heavy crops. Nice programmable options through Tamron's free lens app, including linear focus. |
negative: | Slight distortion, lens is new enough at this point that manual correction is needed as profiles aren't in my processing programs. A bit of flare, but not awful. Tripod collar is extra. Can't use with TC, but that's pretty typical for E Mount. |
comment: | Not tested on 36MP, tested on a 33MP A7 IV, but no choice for that in the list. Tamron seems to have the superzooms sorted. This lens is sharp from end to end and corner to corner. It stands up to hi-res sensors well. Good color and contrast. I have/have had several lenses in this range from the old Minolta 100-400 APO and on, this is the best of the lot to date. If you don't need fast apertures or burst rates above 15FPS, and $2500 isn't in your budget, this lens is a no-brainer. For my use, the added 50mm makes this a first choice. |
