positive: | Good build quality. Very sharp, fast autofocus, good weather sealing. Focal range is excellent, the additional 50mm at the short end makes this a one lens solution for all but wide. Good closeup with a 1:2 magnification from 50-70mm. Excellent size for the focal range. Stays sharp with heavy crops. Nice programmable options through Tamron's free lens app, including linear focus. |
negative: | Slight distortion, lens is new enough at this point that manual correction is needed as profiles aren't in my processing programs. A bit of flare, but not awful. Tripod collar is extra. Can't use with TC, but that's pretty typical for E Mount. |
comment: | Not tested on 36MP, tested on a 33MP A7 IV, but no choice for that in the list. Tamron seems to have the superzooms sorted. This lens is sharp from end to end and corner to corner. It stands up to hi-res sensors well. Good color and contrast. I have/have had several lenses in this range from the old Minolta 100-400 APO and on, this is the best of the lot to date. If you don't need fast apertures or burst rates above 15FPS, and $2500 isn't in your budget, this lens is a no-brainer. For my use, the added 50mm makes this a first choice. |

compared to: | Sony FE 5.6-6.3/200-600 G OSS Sony AF 4-5.6/70-400 SSM G (A mount, I haven't used these side by side since 70-400G was sold already earlier) |

positive: | + Very useful focal length range + Reasonably small and light lens + Decent magnification and minimum focusing distance (especially at wide end) |
negative: | - Cannot be used with teleconverters - Tripod collar must be purchased separately - Does not survive submerging into water :-) |
comment: | This is a versatile telephoto lens that works for many use cases, albeit the long end at 400 mm may at times feel tad short, although the fact the wide end starts at 50 mm compensates this quite a bit. |
