positive: | -Surprisly sharp at wide open, very sharp at f8-9 -fair built for this price -useful at 300mm -cheap |
negative: | -some CA in low light -washing colour -bad IQ at 100mm |
comment: | In opposite to other budget tele lens, this one is better at long end, and worse at 100mm. Useful range in this lens is 135-300mm, and the best in 135-280. It's good choice for amateur nature photo. |

positive: | It seems somewhat rare. Hooray!! It will mount on a camera. It will take a picture. |
negative: | Why would anyone buy an f5-f6.3 300mm zoom? Why buy any lens built like this abomination of very cheap plastic? |
comment: | AVOID THIS LENS LIKE THE PLAGUE. This has to be the most horrible zoom lens of this focal range that I have ever touched. Build quality is absolute crap! This thing feels like a toy. I could go into detail, but why bother. Just realize that the build is lousy as hell. I won't waste anymore time reviewing this lens, because that is exactly what this lens is, a waste. Truly one of Tamron's worst offerings. The bottom line is, lens build does not get alot worse than this. It's a lens. It mounts on a camera and takes pictures. That is all you can say in its defense. Bought in a box lot on Ebay, in order to get the other items. I am just glad I found somebody to buy it from me. Not to insult, but how can you previous reviewers give this lens a 4 in build rating? |

positive: | Sharp wide open. Maintains sharpness at 300mm. Small and light. Cheap. |
negative: | Maximum aperture not very wide. Some CA at wide apertures. |
comment: | For not a lot of money this lens gives good results in good light, although IQ seems to drop off quite sharply if the lighting isn't good. Shots in good light have good colour and excellent contrast and sharpness doesn't appear to tail off too badly at 300mm, which suits me - if I use a lens like this, I'm going to want to use it (and get good results) at 250-300mm most of the time. It would be better if the maximum aperture at 300mm was wider than f6.3, but I can live with it. Its unquestionably a 'budget lens' and doesn't bear up to very close scrutiny compared to more expensive glass (as you would expect) but is a clear winner on value for money. Although its light, build quality seems good and I've never had any problems. Update: taken some more test shots now and in careful direct comparison with the Beercan and Sigma, both those other lenses have better IQ, but its pretty close and the Tamron is still good value considering its cheap price. It is also quite a bit lighter than the others. |

comment: | I was looking for a lens in this range. Wide open it is not too bad at 200mm. Sharp daylight lens and good lens for price. comment: | I have had this lens on both my ald Minolta film camera, my Minolta 7D and my Sony a700. A zoom like this is a bit of a specialty item, but it actually has a lot of uses for the photographer who are creative with it. As stated - it is not a fast zoom. Very few 300 mm zooms are, if you dont want to pay through the nose. So it needs light, light and light. But given that it can produce quite sharp and beautiful pictures. It is a lens where the steadyshot really can help you. Fully zoomed you are still able to take handheld photographs at 1/160 sec. But of course - you get more sharpness with more light. I really love this lens - good build quality (metal mount), versatile range and a price i can live with. positive: | -Good sharpness in good light conditions -Solid and light at same time |
negative: | -Bad results in low light conditions -Pretty slow... |
comment: | Well, I used this lens many times. I shot sports scenes (football matches, windsurfing, cycling) and I even used it for an Air show. It gave me some really good photographs but only with a good level of brightness and a sunny weather. This is not a fast zoom, of course. And shooting in average and low light conditions gave me bad results most of time. Nevertheless, even if this lens is plastic made, it seems solid in the long run though. Recommended for beginners with little budgets. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Lampion27/PICT0361c.jpg |
