compared to:Minolta 70-210 f4 beer can.
price paid:$399 NZ new (1995)
positive:Good reach. Light. Quite well built (but all plastic with a metal bayonet).
negative:Quite long. Low contrast, especially at the long end. Long minimum focus distance.
comment:I bought this in the mid 90s when I first bought a SLR. Mine looked different to the photo here with a long smooth rubberised barrel. Minimum focus distance was 1.5 metres which was a bit far. It had good reach for the money (around the same money as the 70-210/f4-5.6 AF Minolta I recall), and was quite light. The AF speed was slow and AF sometimes missed focussed on a Dynax 500si (probably the camera had something to do with this, although I remember the gearing was low too).I traded the camera and lens on a MF camera lens after a couple of years.

compared to:Sigma 70-300 Macro Super
Sigma 70-200 EX DG HSM Macro II
Minolta 100-300 APO
price paid:24.00
positive:Super cheap
Relatively light
Sharp for the cost and age
negative:A bit flimsy
Not the fastest focusing
comment:I'm going on memory here as I sold the lens along with the a350 it was attached to, but I felt I should leave a review as nobody else had.

I got it for a song, from Japan, where it had apparently sat in bulk stock in a warehouse, unused and collecting dust. I got it and it was absolutely pristine, unused.

It's one of the lowest priced ~70-300 I could find for the a-mount and the price\performance was great. It was about on par with the comparable aged Sigma, which cost about 2x. If you don't plan on using this focal length frequently and are just looking for an affordable lens to cover this range, this would be a great addition. Otherwise, I'd look at springing a bit more into a higher end, more modern purchase.
