comment:This lens is very good autofocus telephoto zoom lens. Nice bokeh, sharpness, colours. I noticed some CA wide open. It is very nice to have a macro mode 1:2, which I found very useful for nature photography. This is very good all-purpose hiking lens.

compared to:Sony 75-300 (SAL75300) Minolta 75-300 (Big Beercan) Beercan, Minolta 70-210 both the original & the RS.
price paid:au$25 (part of pkg)
positive:Sharp through much of its range, a bit soft over 270, amazingly sharp at 70-150 if stopped down a little. Good almost Minolta style colour.
negative:Like many, prone to flare in high contrast or hoodless, but easily controlled once aware of the problem. Does not feel very substantial, but none-the-less seems unbreakable.
comment:A lens that surprises. A very light polycarbonate lens but with a metal mount. It came as a part of a package deal bought for when I needed a lighter long lens around for Kayaking and Mountain biking (or in rain and ocean spray - where I didn't want to risk a "good" lens). The results were extremely good, as good as the Beercan between 100 & 180 and far better than the Sony SAL75300 at all lengths and apertures. The Big Beercan has an edge on it, but the Big Beercan is a brilliant lens.

positive:- Good range
- Decent build quality
- Surprisingly good macro performance
negative:- Soft wide open especially @ longer focal lengths
- Bad CA (purple fringing)
comment:Note: This review is not for the latest DI version of the lens.

I wanted to like this lens for telephoto but the softness and CA are just too much. I picked up a Minolta 75-300 and beercan which I end up using instead of the Tamron. It has surprisingly good macro capability so I'm using it for that until I get a dedicated macro lens.

price paid:129 Eur (new)
positive:Cheap, light, macro to 1:2, sharp enough for excellent A4 prints.
negative:CA, some softness towards long end
comment:Probably one of the most underrated lenses (reading the other reports). I get very good pictures with it if you avoid the high contrast situations that give the CA. The macro feature is handy and when stopped down to 11 or 16 (needed for DOF as well) quite sharp. If you provide a good mix of capture sharpening in lightroom followed by photikit output sharpening in photoshop you can get excellent and sharp prints at A4 (I cannot print larger, so cannot comment on A3+ or larger). Build quality isn't that great so it's by no means as rugged as a big beercan, however this has it advantages with weight. It's a lens well worth it's money and it's always in my bag and use it a lot.
A mono or tri-pod for use at the long end is recommended if you don't want to bump up ISO too much to be able to handhold, especially for close up shots.

negative:soft, poor af, cheap feeling
comment:I got this as my first telezoom when i bought my 5d ( 2nd hand) having owned a manual focus adaptall 2 f4 70-210 I was expecting great things. It's very very poor, I have some reasonable shots in strong light but anything else is soft and mushy.

It also feel like a cheap piece of plastic

70-300 is nice zoom range

Doesn't work well on a digital body but good on an analoge one
comment:Only use it in specific telelens situations.

positive:Cheap, nice telezoom range
negative:Cheap
comment:The first thing I noticed was the cheap build quality. It's not that bad, but it really feel like a cheap plastic thing when compared to the 2 other lenses that I already own.

Relatively light considering the zoom range, it allows you to have an inexpensive telezoom. Picture quality is correct, but not more than correct. Usually a little soft.

Provided hood is so small that it's hard ot reach the lens cap, but at least it cover the lens enough to prevent flare.

In low light condition, it sometimes hunts on my 5D, and it even occasionnaly seek over the full focus range, forward and then backward.

Overall, it's a low price OK lens, but nothing more. Good for occasionnal use, but if you often use this zoom range, you should perhaps search for an other lense.

comment:It's a good lens for the money. I've taken some good shots and it's useful for learning.
I reccomend this lens for beginners, but be prepared to go for a better lens as soon as you want to take more professional shots.
I've never understood why Tamron rates this lens as macro, because it's not macro at all.

comment:If youi've got the money, buy better glass than this. If you're looking for a cheap tele-zoom with macro capability on a shoestring budget, go for it. I've gotten some very nice shots with this lens.
I've also missed quite a few good shots because the lens went searching across its entire focus range. This can be very annoying if you're not prepared for it.
