ownership:I own this lens
compared to:50mm f1.8
35-70 f3.5-4.5
price paid:650NZD (new)
positive:Great price, nice and sharp, and not too big.
negative:Barrel distortion at wide end, particularly at 17mm. Fortunately this is fixable in PS
comment:I'd read the reviews for the varying "standard" zoom lenses, and in the end the reported quality and price were what made me decide to buy it.

I'd got some other lenses from my Minolta film cameras, but didn't have a standard "APS" lens for the recently acquired 5D. The Tamron seemed to be the best option, especially for the price. So far I've been very pleased with the lens. Wide open at 50mm it is great for portraits, stopped down a little at any length and it is very sharp.

Now all Tamron need to do is build a 50-150 or preferrably a 50-200 f2.8, and I'll be very happy!
