ownership:I own this lens
compared to:Tamron 52E
price paid:350.00 USD (new)
positive:Very sharp, true Macro. Great medium telephoto. Light. Focus limiter. Recessed front element. Sturdy enough for all but pro use.
negative:Plastic build, does not report correctly in EXIF. Iffy AF.
comment:This lens is a great upgrade from the earlier 52E 'macro'. It is very sharp and does just what you want it to. It's a real joy to use. It reports as a generic 100mm lens that has a 90mm focal length.
As to AF, this lens is a bit slow and noisy on my A55 and tends to hunt. The focus limiter helps on this. Of course, for close up work you would use MF.
I had to choose between the Tamron and the Sony 100mm Macro and I just could not see my way to spending more than 2X the money for a very similar lens. I am happy with this lens and would recommend it to any amateur that demands high quality shots.
