compared to:Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 AT-X 116 PRO DX
price paid:Free from Tokina EU
positive:Great color
Good image quality
Costant backfocus at any focus distance and focal length
Less backFocus than previous series AT-X 116 PRO DX
No infinity focus issues
negative:Slow spedd and noisy AF
No AF-D electric contacts
Flare
AF/MF selection with old system "Focus Clutch"
comment:Good color, decent Bokeh
Tokina has improved the previous model, now have less issues and less weigth.
But not have improved the electrical parts and don't have AF motor with FTMF function.

Thanks to Tokina who gave me the AT-X 116 PRO DX-II for free, in exchange for my lens AT-X 116 PRO DX with technical problems.

positive:Great build quality
Gets plenty wide
Fast constant aperture
Sharp wide open, even sharper by f/4
Fairly low distortion for what it is
negative:Doesn't have internal AF motor
Flares pretty easily
AF can be iffy
comment:I bought this lens to do landscapes, astrophotography/sky shots, and to fill in what I consider to be a valuable range that not many lenses have in APS-C format, and it does those things well. Distortion is noticeable but very reasonable for a lens of this range (and there is a Lightroom correction profile for it). Color is good, CA is about average and easy to remove. It tends to flare easily even with the included hood, so be careful how you compose your shot if there is a light source within ~80degrees to any side of the lens. The hood/lens is also large and will create a shadow if you use the built-in flash. The sliding focus ring system is a little silly, as you still have to manually engage/disengage AF from your camera body, but it works well other than that. My only real complaint is that the lens is advertised everywhere as having an internal AF motor and it does not for the Sony version. As far as build quality, it is what I would consider good and appropriate for a lens of this caliber and price range. It is heavy, which I consider a good thing, but if you're looking for light lenses, this may be too much for you. Focus and zoom rings are smooth and have a nice resistance to them. Mount is metal and locks securely.

All in all, if you need a very wide rectilinear lens for APS-C, this is a great lens. Just wish it had an internal motor.

positive:Surprisingly wide and sharp.
Built like a tank.
Autofocus is good.
negative:Cannot use a polarizer or Variable ND filter on this lens.
The hood is gigantic.
For APS-C only.
comment:Great for landscapes and night use. Distortion isn't too bad and easily corrected in LR, where there is a lens profile. Some flare if pointed right to the sun, but otherwise not bad. Flare is awful on the Sigma 24mm, in comparison. 11-16mm doesn't seem like a lot of range, but it's more than you'd think. I haven't used it indoors, but suspect it would be great. This is a very wide lens, of course. You can get right up on something and have that object and the whole scene in sharp focus. I took a photo amongst a bunch of wildflowers in the foreground, with a lake beyond and no problems with the water at all. Blown up on canvas, 20x30, beautiful. I like this lens a lot, keeping it. Too bad it's not FF.

positive:The best option for APS-C, wish we had this option for FF.
negative:Love WA and the price is good so no negatives
comment:I had the original 11-16mm and sold it but when the new version became available I decided to try it again but it really is the same lens with a little smoother focusing. Very good lens as long as you use it in clear days with no significant sun or harsh light in you viewfinder.

positive:Price vs quality
Fast lens, gains significant sharpness at F4.....very usable images.
No significant vignetting
Actually has some use on full frame

negative:Bad ghosting.....the new II version is supposed to have better flare protection, but it sucks. Be conscious on how you employ it with certain angles.
comment:Really usable lens. Some limited capability on full frame. Sharpness improvement at F4 but usable at faster speeds. Watch for flaring.

positive:* Sharp wide open
* Sharp edges
* Retains contrast in low light situations
* Good build quality for the price
* Relatively lightweight
* Common 77mm filter size
* Supplied lens hood
* Linear distortion
* Low price compared to other brands
negative:* Small flares occur with light sources in frame
* Minor chromatic aberration wide open
* Average auto focus speed (not an issue if shooting manual for landscapes)
comment:I have used this lens for astro, beach and city at night photography and it has been impressive. Images are sharp wide open and edges are sharpen up when stopped down. Colour and contrast is retained in low light conditions.

The distortion is quite linear and easily correctable with post processing such as Lightroom. Light sources may cause flare however it is comparable to most modern lenses and again easily correctable in post processing.

This wide angle lens is impressive and I would gladly purchase it again.

I highly recommend it for photographers looking for a fast, constant aperture wide angle lens.

Highly recommend.
