ownership:I have experience with this lens
compared to:18-70 kit lens
Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro
28/2 and 24/2.8
price paid:250 (used)
positive:Outstanding performance, easy manual focus, big DOF
negative:Slightly big/heavy
comment:ATX Pro version with 77mm filter diameter (there are several versions with different diameters). Flare spots are typical with this lens if a light source is in the scene, and come in a line across the frame like this image: http://www.pbase.com/image/66315931.jpg Its not too bad or distracting, and I have not seen any veiling/washout that some lenses suffer from.

Very sharp lens and built like a tank, unfortunatly with the weight to prove it. Big clear DOF scale makes manual focusing easy, deep dof makes it easier yet. I manually prefocus with this lens and almost always get great sharp images. Very nice to use all around. No purple fringing seen, even in demanding conditions. Close focusing is important at this wide angle, this has opened up additional opertunities that I didnt have with the kit lens. VERY SLIGHT barrel distortion only seen in certain arcitectural situations with long straight lines.
