compared to:Min. 17-35mm f3.5 G
price paid:$45 USD w/hood
positive:Relatively sharp wide open.
Great range on FF.
Colors are very natural. What you see is what you get.
negative:Minor barrel distortion through out the zoom range.
Vignetting at 19mm.
Flare!!! Hood is a requirement.
comment:I have the Quantaray branded version of this lens. For the price it is hard to beat. The distortion is controllable in post processing and unless you are shooting something with a lot of parallel horizontal lines, you will probably won't notice it.
My copy is a little strange. The sides and corners are sharper than the center. I see this at all focal ranges and f stops.
That being said, I would estimate it's performance to be at least 90% of the Min. 17-35mm G which cost almost 7 times as much.

Update: Did a micro focus adjustment of -4. The center is now sharper than the corners and better than without the adjustment.

positive:Built quality are good & look rugged. Sharp at F5.6 and above. The rubber grip design made it catch less dirt compare to Sony lens.
negative:Vignette are obvious, need to shoot RAW format & do lens correction in Lightroom.
comment:This is my 3rd UWA lens i 've owned. I'm lucky enough to buy this gem for cheap price. This is a keeper inside my camera bag, I used it for every photography task & event. The lens barrel, front element & hood are fit enough to put in standard lens pouch compare to other wide angle lens.

positive:Great range on APS-C. Becomes a standard zoom with 28.5-57.5mm range, great for use in cities.
Build quality is wonderful. Lots of metal and rubber, no plastic.
AF is pretty fast, not the fastest but better than average.
Sharp across the whole range, both center and edge.
negative:barrel distortion across the whole range. Much less at 35mm than at 19mm. Distortion performance only better than kit-grade lenses.
Vignetting in corner when FF, but less significant on APS-C.
Flare flare flare. Tokina has never been good at flare control.
Coatings on this lens were intended for film, not digital, and it shows. Use the lens hood all the time, please.
AF is not the most accurate.
Max magnification is pitiful.
comment:I love playing around with this lens. It's fun on full-frame as an ultrawide, but works great on APS-C as a standard zoom.

comment:Solid build. Very good sharpness, light weight, and a low price option for full frame users. The only problem I have seen with this lens is flare and low contrast when a strong light source is present in the shot. For what I paid for this lens I can live with these little nits. My Sigma 10-20 is very comparable, but nowhere near as sharp and I paid 5x more for that one.

comment:This was a used copy in immaculate condition with a CPL filter and boxed complete. In short, it was the most fun to use simply because of the bang for buck factor. That said, it's every bit as good as many higher priced lenses of similar focal range, though arguably not quite as sharp as top shelf glass, but definitely a joy to use if you're not looking for absolute perfection or the budget that goes with them. It's a solid lens with excellent build quality and it performs very well indeed. A proper solid metal and glass lens that will satisfy most shooters requirements unless you demand the very best and only a G or CZ will do. Highly recommended if you can find a good copy and it's very similar to both the Tamron or KM 17-35mm lenses but less expensive and slightly smaller.

Will have wrong exposure if camera attempts flash-(D)-mode.
comment:I bought this in 1999 for my Minolta Dynax 505si/600si and was always satisfied, without having it evaluated in any formal way. When this lens gave out on me for mechanical reasons after running 2 years (seldomly) on my new A850 in 2012 (no AF, long time until detection, also manual focus with mechanical obstacles) I replaced it with a Soligor 3,5-4,5 19-35mm which is according to sources on the net the same lens. Performs in the same way, looks basically like the Tokina, but has a rubber finish instead of the hard material of the Tokina. The Soligor was 40 Euro on German Ebay.

Note: My A850 will have over-exposure with a flash if the camera is in D-TTL mode (distance mode). Camera must be set to legacy TTL mode. Happened both with the Tokina and Soligor version.

positive:Cheapest ultra wide zoom on full frame, amazing Tokina colors. Light and cheap.
negative:Flare can be bad with light source pointing towards lens. Distortion can be heavy and need correction.
comment:Nothing can beat this little gem at this price. Perfect walk-about ultra wide lens with A850 full frame camera. Colors and contrast are Tokina signature. Stopping down to f5 or more for amazing center sharpness. Border sharpness is not good but common for ultra zoom at this range and price.

Flare can be bad so watch your scene for bright light source. Distortion can be heavy at 19mm but easily corrected in PP. Vignette is visible but can be used to add a style to images.

One of the best purchases I made. At price 2-3 times cheaper than Minolta/Tamron 17-35mm lens, it's a no brainer for newbies that wanna try ultra wide angle on full frame. If you have more money to spend, Minolta/Tamron 17-35mm is a better choice.

comment:I bought this second hand together with a camera, 28-80 minolta zoom, and 100-300 quantary zoom. 80 USD in total.
The lens looks nice, clean, smooth but the shooting result is disappointing. Never really sharp in any range and any speed-aperture combination.
I thought it would be much better the Sony 18-70 kit lens. Obviously no better, if not slightly worse.
I tried it with my film camera, same result. No better than the 28-80 kit.

positive:good center sharpness, light weight, low price
negative:distortion at wide end
comment:This lens performs better than you might expect for the bargin price. I took a chance on it in order to get the 19-28mm range for my film camera. Images are pleasingly sharp and colors are good. Distortions are there at the wide end, but not distracting on real-life subjects. I printed a 36" wide panorama shot using this lens and it looks good. This lens is very light weight, so it's easy to carry and handle.
Updated 8/31/10: I recently tested this lens on film at 20mm against the Minolta 20mm prime and at 28mm against the Minolta 28-135 and Tamron 28-75. The Tokina held it's own. In general I prefer the Minolta exposure and colors. For sharpness, the Tokina is as good as the prime right in the center but certainly not at the edges; it's as good or better than the longer zooms all across the image at 28mm.
UPDATE for full frame digital - conclusions above still hold and, BTW, you have to be looking at 100% image size to see these differences. -5 micro focus adjustment applied to achieve a good compromise between 19mm f/3.5 and 35mm f/4. An under rated, solid performer.

comment:I got this len to replace kit lens on a300 for wide angle shot and it perform far better. Very good sharpness start from f/8 which is mostly use for landscape shot. Produce good colour that i rarely need to fix it in PS. but flare control not too good in my experience. its a good performer cheap lens. So if u need a budget wide angle lens and 19mm is wide enough for your need, then go get this lens...

comment:A really great lens for the price. I got my copy new for under $100. This is a really good focal range for crop sensors, could stand to be a little wider (maybe 17), but still really good. Pictures are pretty sharp (even wide open), colors are good. AF is fast, not bad in low light either.

For the price, you probably can't find a better wide angle zoom.

comment:keep in mind this is my first wide angle lense on full frame. Great lense for the price. Using this lense above F5.6 is great and I rarely use it below that. Colours aren't that good but it makes good black and white images.

Distortion is pretty bad on this but it is a cheap lense after all. Distortion is quite noticeable and I don't think the corners are sharp at any F stop. Once again, this is not a high end lense so it can't be blamed.

positive:Sharp through all focal lengths, good even when wide open, brilliant when stopped down a little, great colour, very fast focus, filter doesn't rotate, good feel, solid construction - (polycarbonate and stainless steel). Very low linear distortion at 19mm, much better than my Minolta 20/F2.8.
negative:None that are realistic for a wide zoom. It performs well, very well.
comment:A surprisingly well designed and constructed lens. The elements are made by Hoya and are all multi-coated low dispersion, high refraction good quality glass. Stopped down just slightly this amazing little zoom performs like a fast Minolta prime, similar clarity, colour and contrast. It is far better than the more expensive 20-35 that it replaces. Unless I absolutely need more speed, I'll use it in situations where I would normally use a fast prime. I would never have considered using its predecessor that way. I haven't had it for long, but I regard it as a lucky find.

comment:This lens would be a good deal at retail, for the $75 I paid with shipping it is an absolute gift! The color and sharpness are better than the kit lens and it is FF to boot. (although colors are a bit cooler than the classic Minolta AF glass)
Flare and distortion are only what I'd expect from an ultra wide with this many elements, but compared to primes it does flare and does have noticeable barrel distortion at all focal lengths. Focus is fast and positive on my 5D (even better on the a700 of course).
The plastic/metal hybrid construction is odd but reassuringly solid and the focus and zoom rings are very smooth and positive. All in all I'd rate this as a great lens for those on a budget, but who want more IQ than the kit lens can provide.

** in reference to the flare this lens experiences, it will show colored discs with a hot light source, but contrast reduction is relatively mild compared to the Minolta 35-70 f4 and Sigma 24 f2.8, IMO one of the best bangs for the buck in the entire A mount universe!

** Another plus for this lens is that it has very smooth bokeh for a wide zoom.

** On FF, this lens still shows great color, acceptable linear distortion and very decent sharpness, C/A doesn't seem to get much worse than on APS-C and as a bonus, on FF it's an ultra-wide. In comparison to the 20 and 24mm Minolta primes, it seems to be pretty close in terms of sharpness, with slightly worse flare, the 35 f1.4 kills it, but I would be very disappointed if it didn't! Vignetting is noticeable when it's wide open, or in low light at both focal length extremes, but overall, it's still a very respectable performer on FF.

negative:Big, some back focus issue with my 7D but I don't know if this is caused by lens ???
comment:I use this lens for two years with pleasure. I know it doesn't have a wide range, but for this range, this lens is a real star. Combined with exclusive color scala of my 7D, I took lovely pictures. Sharpness of the lens really impressive especially for this price. My copy is very sharp even wide open. And bokeh is also not bad for such a wide lens with moderate aparture.
Since it is full frame, with a cheap film body one may also have a "super" wide angle, but I could not try the FF performance.
I did some amateur tests with my Minolta lenses and found that it is near the IQ of primes, better than 28-135 (2 copies of them ) and not bad compare to 28-75.
This is a good lens.

comment:I have the COSINA version, but it seems that they are 100% matched.

Was surprised about the sharpness, matches my Sigma 24 2,8 actually (not with the light intensiveness though).

Quite light, good to have on your camera walking through a city or taking pictures of a group of people all around you, for instance.

The plastic does not feel very nice, but the pictures produced for the price are absolutely great.

positive:Sharp, good colour, build quality.
negative:Flares a lot, AF not quite great.
comment:Good quality build(plastic, but solid), nicely rubbered MF and zoom rings. Sharpness is good from f/5,6 up. At f/10-11 it is great for landscapes, very sharp, but at f/16 diffraction says its word: the sharpness goes down. It does not lock focus too well with my 5D and hunts in low light. It is in fact one of the worst AF lenses I ever used, in low light. But considering that infinity focus is just after 2m, there are no problems. In good light it works excellent. You can't get anything better for this price.

77mm filters... Argh!!!
comment:The BEST Wide-Zoom lens you can buy for this price.
Obviously it is quite soft wide open, but very usable from f5.6. The sharpness is constant from center to border at all apertures. At f8~10 is very sharp, really close to the Tamron.
The built quality is excellent. Full Metal barrel and bayonet! Solid like a tank!

On APS-C is a true 28mm (28,5). Really creative!
No aberrations. The filter ring does not rotate focusing and the lenght of the lens is "fixed" from 19 to 35mm.
The only problem is for flares... Buy it with a Lens Hood!

PS. It is not the same lens as Vivitar-Cosina-Phoenix ones!!!

positive:A definite step up from kit lens both in results and build quality.Sharp across whole image. Came with petal lens hood. Fast auto-focus. Quiet. Excellent value
negative:20-35 not 19-35. Need to be a little more careful to avoid flare.
comment:Very surprised at the quality of this lens for the price. It is a clear step up from the kit lens which I have now decided to sell.Whilst not quite as good as the ATX Pro :(Thank goodness!!) It is much lighter to carry and allows for that wider shot. A great combination though:- ATX Pro on camera and AF193 carried for wider views.

positive:Reasonably good for large landscape - particularly with polorizer. Fairly sharp at f8 and up. Sharp to the corners. (crop factor helps here)
negative:Too much distortion where buildings and the like are envolved.
comment:One gets what they pay for and you can't beat the price on this lens. I use it only for landscapes where straight lines are not critical and on a tripod where I can make use of smaller f-stops. It is not a fast lens but used properly it will provide very sharp well saturated images. Not sorry that I bought it. (to fill in the wider angle lost to crop factor with my 24-105 Minolta)
