positive: | Light-weight; responsive AF; nice color and IQ; sharp at f/5.6 or smaller aperture; good low light performance if tack sharp is not required (f/2.8-3.5); low cost |
negative: | Dull colors in heavily overcast weather |
comment: | Excellent performance for such a low-cost lens! I bought my copy primarily to snap family events indoors in low light (on an A350, then an A500 and now an A33), and it does the job reasonably well. Outdoors it is sharp as well as light-weight, nice to use. It isn't nearly as versatile as the Sigma 17-70mm, so I haven't used the Tokina a lot (although I have posted a few sample photos). I've now found the improved ISO performance of the A33 allows me to use a recently-acquired Minolta 24-85 in fairly low light, and it is a bit sharper at f/3.5 than the Tokina 28-70mm at f/2.8-3.5. The touch of softness of the Tokina at f/2.8-3.5 actually looks good on close-ups of the grandchildren. It can't touch the primes, of course. But it remains a good performer as a low-light lens for anyone on a limited budget. |

positive: | Pretty sharp even wide open Fast aperture at wider end of zoom Good build quality |
negative: | A little low in contrast but nothing major May need a hood to reduce veiling glare in bright light |
comment: | I was expecting soft corners at the wide end based on previous reviews but was pleasantly surprised that my copy is actually pretty sharp at 28mm, corner to corner even at F2.8. Sharpness-wise there is really nothing much to complain about except for some slight softness at the tele end which disappears once you stop down. Color is a little cool but this could be easily remedied through white balance. |

positive: | - cheap - good range on film - nice and small - surprisingly sharp when stopped down |
negative: | - doesn't work well on Dynax 7 - super soft corners @ 28mm, F2.8 - well, can't really find anything else considering the price |
comment: | This is in fact a really nice lens. I've got it really cheap on eBay and I've been pleasantly surprised by the little thing. Image quality is really OK, CA's not obtrusive, the softness wide open goes away at F8 giving you a lens far superior than the 18-70 resolution and color-wise. (although it does present rather high barrel distortion @ wide angle) It's surprisingly well built and compact. The inner lens barrel is metal and the zoom ring feels very good. Nothing's loose on this lens. It focuses very fast. On APS-C it's quite usable wide open because the corners aren't that important anymore. I'm very pleased with this lens, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for cheap glass in this range. ! Note ! On Dynax 7, I don't understant why, when you zoom, as you approach the 50mm mark the camera freezes. Going to 28 or 70mm solves the problem but it may become a bit frustrating. |

positive: | cheap build quality sharpness when stopped down wide aperture zoomring feels nice |
negative: | no AF when in macro noisy AF |
comment: | bought this one at Marktplaats for 50 EUR. I like it very much, it is sharp when stopped down a bit, produces nice colours, it is lightweight.wide-open it gives nice bokeh..(donuts) I like the zoomring, which feels a lot better than from the sonny 18-70. Af is somewhat noisy, but is faster then the AF from the minolta and sony kitlens. It's a bargain. |

positive: | Light and cheap. Sharp for what it is. Macro more useful than I would have though |
negative: | Not super build quality, but for the price very good. |
comment: | I haven't used this lens much at all but thought I would offer my short review of it since I was more impressed than I expected with it. I used the lens on a 700si shooting b&w film. Obviously I cannot comment on the color... but I found the sharpness better than expected - really quite nice. There seems to be a little noticeable distortion at the long end. As far as flare goes, I didn't really "test" that but on the sunny day I used it nothing came out in the pictures at all. Build is a little plastic feeling, but better than expected. If you can get one cheap this is a worthy lens imho. |

positive: | - 2.8 at 28mm - Well built - Macro Option |
negative: | - Only MF in macro mode - takes a long time to be detected on the Dynax 7 - Switching to MF on the lens and on the camera can be pain. |
comment: | I've used this lens in the past on my Dynax 800si on which it works fine, but it's troubling on the Dynax 7. |

comment: | This is a rather old lens, but if I lost it I would replace it. I’ve used it as my main lens, since buying it for my old Dynax 7000AF body. It works fine with the Dynax 7d Update: After many years of use the lens got too much tolerance in the front lens group (Front focus lens). I have replaced it with the Sigma. |
