positive:Solid build

Internal focus
negative:soft and low contrast at f2.8
Flare problems!
comment:I have got this lens as addition to the Minolta 28-70/2.8 G (the slow AF of the G lens drives me sometimes nuts). While I got a faster AF the Tokina is significantly less sharp with lower contrast at 2.8. Additionally the usage outdoors is further affected by the lens poor flare control. In the end I use it for indoor sport events only, for everything else the Minolta G.

positive:Top build quality.
negative:At 70mm the lens is quite soft at wide-open aperture.
comment:I wanted this lens for indoors theatre and athletic events with my A700. Mostly to be used for portraits at 70mm and occasionally at 28mm to include the whole team or cast. I wanted constant 2.8 aperture to gain as much as possible from the law light situations. But at 70mm F2.8 is unacceptably soft. Bud buy, I am disappointed.

comment:My lens is AT-X Pro, not AT-X Pro SV
A little bit soft at 2.8.
NOticeable CA at 70mm 2.8.
CA is almost gone at 70mm F4.
This lens is as sharp as CZ 16-80 when stopping down.
But it's much heavier than the CZ 16-80. Bought this one to replace the Min 28-135mm.
It's not compatible with ADI Flash :(

negative:slightly soft at f2.8
comment:I have this lens for almost three months. This lens has an excellent solid all-metal build and not too heavy for me. The sharpness is ok at f2.8 but really sharp from f4 and above. The colors are as good as the minolta glasses.

Great value for the price.

Af a little slow
comment:Side by side with the Min 28-70/2.8 G the Tokina's shortcomings are noticeable - but only just. The sharpness, colours and overall IQ are so good that I can only fault the Tokina's results when I compare it to the Minolta. AF is a little slow, but accurate. It's a weighty lens, but feels good in the hand. Add the lower price and the bomb-proof build quality and all in all it's worthy of serious consideration.

positive:Build, feeling, balance with the camera, sharpness, colour
negative:sometimes some problems with flare, shrpness at 2.8 with digital
comment:I have this lens since a year. For this price (bought it for about 280€) it is an excellent lens and for long time my favorite.

Excellent balannce in hand, ok it is heavy but it balances perfectly with Dynax D7 or Dynax D7D and f/2,8 is often very useful that is what you are looking for aren't you ?

The sharpness is slightly better with the analog Dynax D7 compared to digital D7D. I didn't test it yet with a 10MP Sony. Build like a tank very solid !

positive:Build, sharpness, colour, the petal lens hood is efficient.
negative:flares a bit, very heavy, the MF clutch.
comment:This lens has a superb all-metal build. The manual focus is extremely smooth and the ring is enormous and nicely rubbered. The sharpness is ok at 2,8 but has poor contrast. From f/4 up the contrast is good, and the sharpness gets better and better. It is very sharp at f/5-5,6(as sharp as the 50mm at the same aperture). Good AF performance on Minolta 5D and excellent on my film camera Maxxum 50QD. Focuses well in low light but sometimes hunts a little bit.
One might feel the need of a vertical grip for perfect balance with the camera.
Excellent for the price.

positive:Solid build
Constant 2.8
Great color
Very sharp
Great range (for me)
negative:Some AF hunting in low light at lower end (28mm to about 50 or so)
Stiff turn for focal length (don't know if it's just mine or what)
comment:This is a very old, first generation model of this lens (72mm, not 77mm). The only equivalent lens I have had was the kit lend that came with my 5d, so that is the only thing I have to compare the quality of this lens to.

I did not notice any flares or distortion on any picture. The sharpness was excellent overall, though a bit (tiny bit) off at 2.8 throughout the focal range.

I did indoor and outdoor shots at 28mm, 50mm and 70mm at 2.8, 4, 8, 11 and the lens performed well (I thought) through out except for not being as sharp at 2.8 (but I think that is norm for many lenses from what I have read when shot wide open??)

I gave the build a 4 because of the stiff turn for focal length. I would have given it a 4.5, but that was not available. Everything else build wise was outstanding.

The price for the lens included a UV filter, but not a lens bag or lens hood (thought I'd add that for reference).

positive:Sharp, fast, free of distortion
negative:Flare can be a problem
comment:Sharp, fast, pictures free of visible distortions. Heavy. Tends to flare, even with hood on. In combination with my Dyxum 7D in some situations it needs to get underexposed by 1/3 or 2/3 EV. For colour rating I´d rather preferred a "4.5", but I only had the choice between 4 and 5.
