flare control: 4
|ownership:||I own this lens|
|compared to:||E 16-55mm f/2.8 at 24mm|
|price paid:||299 USD (new)|
|positive:||Relatively small size and light weight,|
Sharp across the whole image from f/4 and smaller,
Fit and finish are very good,
... and all that for a modest price
|negative:||Finding out how to update the lens firmware through its USB port took some discovery; YouTube is your friend here.|
|comment:||This lens turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. Normally there is nothing to say about the packaging but, in this case, it is up-scale; reminds me of how Apple boxes their products. Combined with how the lens feels in your hand, both lead to making a good first impression.|
Image quality is very good. I would only use f/1.4 in a pinch, but center sharpness from f/2 and smaller goes from good to excellent. As noted, the corners are sharp from f/4 and smaller.
Raw, uncorrected files show significant vignetting up to f/2.8, but its gone at f/4; there is also significant barrel distortion. The good news is, Viltrox has made a correction file available for PS/LR that you can manually install.
For me, this lens is a keeper.
