positive: | Compact lens for what it is; robust weather-sealed & f/2 Sharpness across the field wide open Colours and contrast easy to work with in PP |
negative: | Flare/Colour fringing; nothing realy bad that can not be ajusted in PP, but not up there with the lastest GM |
comment: | As mentioned above; it's not up to the perfection in IQ and AF as the latest GM lenses (I own the 35 & 135). But this used copy gives me what I like; punchy images with enough details and out of focus separation (in the same way I recognise of my Loxia 21). Distortion is there, but OK/good for a wide angle if you keep humans outside the very corners. The colour fringing is there, even stopped down a bit, a compromise I can live with. After buying the Batis 85 some time back I realy wanted to try it out with the Batis 25 as a dual AF lens set-up for short trips and streetphotography. With the release of many lastest/greatest lenses these somewhat older Batis lenses overflow the secondhand market. But there is a reason why these lenses demand such a high premium when bought new. No doubt this lens(es) can deliver the goods! |

positive: | Sharp across all apertures Excellent color and micro-contrast Nice size; balances well on a7rii Relatively fast aperture Excellent AF — good tracking |
negative: | Nothing significant |
comment: | Outstanding lens. Very compact and feels well balanced on the camera. Images are sharp with vivid colors and contrast. Shows a definite advantage over the 16-35mm f4 (@24mm) and definitely superior to the older Minolta and Nikkor. One thing I like about the Batis line up is the color matching across all three of my lenses (40mm and 85mm). This lens has been overshadowed in the internet world by the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM, but from what I have gleaned from reviews, it's not by much. I purchased this one on the used market long before the Sony was released, and I am sure there are more deals available today. |

positive: | Well made, weather sealed, excellent IQ |
negative: | Hood plastic is not a perfect match for the black of the lens. |
comment: | I bought mine 2nd hand on eBay. The price has come down quite a lot lately as people trade up to the Sony 24-GM. Some sellers are still trying to get high prices but hold out for an auction and if you don't win just wait for the next.. It's worth it. This is a really nice lens. I'm not a fan of the curvy-smoothy-slippery styling but I love the look, saturation, colour, sharpness and detail of the images that it makes. It focuses close enough to get nice blurry backgrounds and to separate the subject, it is beautifully balanced on the A7r3 & r2 and isn't too heavy at 391g, including the hood. This is an easy lens to recommend. If you don't want to stump up for the 24GM the Zeiss is not very far behind it in any regard. It is now good value, on the second hand market at least. |

comment: | A tank, of a lens delivers across the board! When I made the jump to FF I missed the close focus capability of the CZ 24mm on the APS, and this has just filled the spot perfectly. |

compared to: | Sony-Zeiss 16-35 f4, which is also a great lens, but the Batis is just that little bit better, and that already from f2. |

positive: | Stunning sharpness, color, Zeiss pop. Handling, look. |
negative: | Nothing, really. I have the impression that the led display is not so accurate at long distances, but I have it on only for the rare occasions that I focus manually, so it is of no consequence to me. |
comment: | Another wonderful Batis. This collection exhausts superlatives. |

comment: | Excellent lens. On the negative side is the lack of micro textured surface making it a bit slippery. |

positive: | + Fairly compact + Good image quality + OLED display |
negative: | - The smooth rubber on the focus ring may not offer the best grip - Setting OLED display settings bit complicated - Not the cheapest lens |
comment: | This lens offers about all you can wish for a wide-angle prime. Only significant problem can be the smooth finish on the focus ring, but if you use primarily autofocus even that may not be big hindrance. |

positive: | Build Quality Handling and Balance (on A7II) Weathersealing Zeiss Colour and Contrast Fast Autofocus Minimum focus distance |

comment: | The Batis lenses (25mm and 85mm) are the first native lenses I have purchased for my A7II, having used Minolta Lenses with the LEA4 adaptor for 12 months or so. I was not really tempted to buy native Sony full frame lenses straight away and was at first tempted to buy the Zeiss Loxia 35mm as my first native lens. However, I am glad that I waited a little longer until the Batis lenses with autofocus arrived. These lenses are just a joy to use on the A7 range and are not too unwieldy on my older NEX5N either. They both have a simplistic and solid feel to them. Image sharpness is amazing and the 25mm is a great focal length for my interests in photography.I am looking forward to taking this lens to London on a sightseeing trip over Easter.I also bought Zeiss T* filters to ensure image quality is maintained with these lenses. I am really impressed with the minimum focusing distance of the 25mm (20cm)which is great for sharp close ups and smooth background bokeh. The 25mm is not a stabilised lens (unlike the 85mm) but is not an issue on this focal length especially with the A7II with IS. I have found the LED focal length and depth of field readings more useful on the 25mm than on the 85mm when using manual focus. It's a nice feature to have but if you choose not to use it the function blends into the background on the lens body. These lenses are definite keepers which should give many years of reliable service and not to mention great pics. |

comment: | Great lens, just at f5.6 can generate long star spikes in night scenery; able to achieve what Zeiss old MF lenses level which those Sony " Zeiss" lenses (such as 24f2 ZA) lack of. |

positive: | Excellent sharpness, excellent colours, excellent excellent excellent when it comes to optical performance. |
negative: | Quite large and heavy and the OLED display is a bit too strange to use for me. |
comment: | I have to admit, that the results of his lens are super convincing. But it is oversized for me, especially as I am not a wideangle guy, the 16-35 will do it for me. The OLED display is not well thought, it's strange to use, I avoided it. Due to this design weakness only 4 points in "build", from a sheer engineering point of view this lens is 5. |

compared to: | Canon TS-E 24 II via Metabones MKiV The Canon used as standard 24mm (without TS usage) is already close to delivering perfect IQ, but for my taste the Zeiss is able to slightly surpass because it produces the nicer colors and slightly better contrast. Sharpness wide open is on par, whereas the Zeiss offers a 1,66 stopp advantage over the Canon. |
price paid: | 1.249 € |
positive: | Size and weight, built quality. Color rendition and contrast. Quite fast and very reliable AF operation. |
negative: | ./. |
comment: | Because of the weight of the Canon incl. adapter (roughly 1kg) I planned to go for a 20-25mm prime with lower weight/size. I didn't had the Zeiss in mind at the first place, but when I visited a retailer in a neighbortown a month ago I didn't trust my eyes when I saw a Batis 25/2 in the shelf. When he confirmed that it was no pre order, I played with it a moment and bought it right away. In the beginning I thought the OLED would just be a nice gimmick, but meanwhile I learned to really love it , and it is accurate like hell. Color and contrast is what I like so much with Zeiss over the years, and the Batis delivers perfectly. All in all - the lens is simply amazing. It's a joy to use. If the price tag can be beared, just grab one if you can get one. |
