positive: | I bought mine very cheaply. It is a good lens, though there are many other better options at the 30-35mm focal length. It is light and extremely sharp in the centre from f1.8. |
negative: | Distortion, vignetting and the 52mm front filter. Noisy AF |
comment: | An enjoyable lens to use. Nice colours, light and sharp. If you find a copoy for the right price, it is worthwhile getting it. |

positive: | Sharp wide-open Fairly flat focus plane 9 aperture blades Closer to 50 mm equivalent |
negative: | Somewhat slow & noisy focusing Imprecise focus-by-wire Cheap looking, primitive design Untextured focus grip No optical stabilization Minor barrel distortion Axial chromatic abberration A stop less bright than the Sigma F1.4 C |
comment: | A clean, well-used bare copy with the black finish somewhat worn around the edges. Only the original rear cap was included. This is a fairly simple planar lens design with unit focus like most older normal primes. The body shell seems to be fairly thick aluminum alloy. The smooth rubber focus grip attracts dirt. It came with the "02" firmware supporting Fast Hybrid Autofocus. The current list price is $720. "Made in Japan" On the Sony APS-C cameras it is equivalent to about 49 mm F2.8 on full-frame. It does not have much full-frame coverage. It is much sharper than the little Neewer 32mm F1.6. The focus-by-wire doesn't allow precise manual focus. It uses a DC motor much like the Tamron OSD primes and FE 50 F1.8 and A-mount SAM lenses. Hybrid AF works across the frame at all apertures unlike the Sigma DN lenses. The focusing is slower than the Sony OSS lens, but the reduced focus breathing makes focus transitions smoother. This copy is sharper than the Sigma 30 F1.4's or Sony 35 F1.8 OSS, but has somewhat less contrast than the Sony DT 35mm F1.8 SAM. It has less focus plane curvature than either Sony 35mm F1.8 but is not quite as flat as the Fotasy 35mm F1.6. Lateral chromatic aberration is well controlled--perhaps due to the two extra lens elements. It has a similar amount of barrel distortion as the Sony DT 35 F1.8 SAM, much less than the Sigma 30 F1.4 C. The 35 OSS has much less. Original plastic hoods are readily available new for $45 shipped which is about what I paid for the Fotasy lens. The circular hood is much deeper than the ones included with the other lenses. The front element is quite recessed at infinity focus, and never sticks out, so the hood is not necessary for protection. I purchased an original front cap for a reasonable amount now included in the price paid field. Overall, a simple but effective normal prime for APS-C with a pair of blue logos. |

compared to: | SAL 35 1,8 - less CA and slightly worse bokeh with the Zeiss |
price paid: | missing |
positive: | -AF-C is actually quick with a quick body (like the A6000) and accurate. AF-S is quick too for more stationary things. (post lens firmware update) -Sharp wide open, minimal CA -Fits the A6000 size-wise |
negative: | -Manual focus-by-wire with this motor isn't so great, it makes a noise and vibrates a little bit -The bokeh is good wide open and at mfd. At whole-body-distance the bokeh is generally rather bad. -A slight minus is that the rubber grip attracts pollen very easily, but it comes off without trouble too, with a damp cloth. |
comment: | I sold it because of the "planar" bokeh. Looking through the Flickr pool confirmed that whole-body portraits with it tend to be colorful, sharp and...that bokeh. |

positive: | - very sharp (even at the corners wide open) - typical Zeiss micro-contrast - nice bokeh wide open - very good flare resistance, almost no CAs, excellent multi-coatings - focal length makes it an ideal allround-prime - compact and light-weight |
negative: | - no optical stabilization |
comment: | This lens is now my standard lens for the Sony A6000. I like the rendering very much - which combines sharpness and micro-contrast with very good bokeh qualities. This is a lens with one of the best IQs I know of. AF is quick and responsive - but a bit louder than the AF of the 12mm Touit. Haptic and aesthetic qualities are excellent. |

compared to: | Zeiss 24mm and zooms. |
price paid: | 900.00 |
positive: | Just a smidge sharper than the Zeiss 24. The bokeh my be just a tad better than the 24, but they are very close. Center is already at a high level wide open and only improves slightly from there. Corners are a little better than the 24 and are as good as the center by f/4. Build quality is very high, but does not feel as substantial as the 24...not a bad thing because it is light and still feels like it will last a long time. A dream to focus in manual. |
negative: | The only weakness is that is has an issue with AF. With my NEX7, it constantly wants to focus which will drain the battery quickly. The "fix" for this is just assign AF/MF button to AF so the half press of the shutter button does not focus. I have actually grown to love shooting this way. |
comment: | It is right up there with the sel24z as the best APS-C emount lens. Choose whichever focal length you are more comfortable shooting at and don't look back. Some would argue that the lack of IBIS is a negative, but I don't. I use this (and the 24) in low light settings often, and I never find that I miss IBIS. I do wonder if IBIS would have created a lens that does not allow for the high IQ seen here with this lens. |
