compared to: | Sony FE1.8/85 Sigma 1.4/85 Carl Zeiss 1.4/85 ZF.2 Jupiter 9 2/85 |
price paid: | 475 euro SH |
positive: | IQ AF Size & weight |
negative: | - focusring rubber is a magnet for dust - not the prettiest lens around - compaired to my other lenses (sigma Contemporary) build/handling is odd. Thats why I gave it 4 rating |
comment: | I did like my Sony FE1.8/85 for portraits, but I'd miss something in IQ for landscape / cityscape in rendering the colours and 3D feel. A good deal came by for this lens, had to try it. So far, its better in colours and more balanced in overall draw compaired to the FE1.8/85 #update; this lens keeps positively surprise me. Wide open it's still sharp (as sharp as the FE1.8/85) but offers some 'glow' which give my images that something extra in portraits at full body lenght. Ergonomics are fine & weight is OK for me. Using it without the (big) sunhood. Bought a cheap filter-tread-sunhood via amazon. Does the job fine. |

compared to: | Sony FE 85 and Sony 85 GM. |
price paid: | 1100 USD (new) |
positive: | Very sharp with great colors and contrast. Fast focusing for an 85mm and OSS seems to work pretty well. Nice balance with my A7iii and it's not too unwieldy with the A6000. Excellent build quality and weather sealing. |
negative: | Wish it had an AF/MF switch as well as a focus hold button (which is why I gave it 4/5 for build). |
comment: | I bought this over the Sony FE 85 because of the OSS and weather sealing. I considered the 85 GM but I wanted OSS when I use it with my A6000 plus I like the smaller and lighter package. |

compared to: | Sony A-mount 85/2.8 (flimsy built quality, sharp, cheap), Sony E-mount 85/1.8 (sharp but less sharp, bad flare resistance, cheaper) |
price paid: | € 1150, VAT included |
positive: | Great flare resistance Extraordinary sharpness OLED display No more adapter needed Quiet |
negative: | Blue Zeiss logo attracts the wrong people. Black gaffer tape did the job. |
comment: | The OLED display is a true miracle. It makes it possible for me to shoot a background as if a virtual subject is placed at a certain distance. The bokeh of the background will be accordingly. The main subject will be shot in front of a green screen. Later in PS, the background and main subject are composited together. It looks all natural. No fake blur in PS needed. |

price paid: | approx 1200 Euro |
positive: | Sharpness, color, Zeiss pop, handling, look. |
negative: | It hunts in bad light. |
comment: | I've since sold my Planar 85mm for the A-mount, and although that was a great lens too, this one tops it. |

positive: | Sharpness throughout aperture range Zeiss colours and contrast Build Quality Weather sealed. IS |
negative: | Tendency to hunt a little in low light situations. |
comment: | My first native lens for the Sony full frame E mount and I was not disappointed after nearly 12 months of indecision over which native lenses to buy. The purchase of this lens led me to buy the 25mm Batis 2 months later. This 85mm lens is unbelievably sharp and is a versatile focal length. The lens is no heavier than my older Minolta A mount lenses with the LEA4 adapter. I really love my 100-300 APO which I have used for portraiture, and like this lens is a definite keeper, but obviously the 85mm Zeiss Batis has the benefit of being faster and more closely matched to modern sensors. The build quality of these Batis lenses is excellent and I also find the LED DOF display useful when manual focusing, but if you don't wish to use this functionality, it just blends nicely into the lens body. The autofocus speed on this lens is very good, although some low light situations can cause a marginal amount of hunting (this not being the case for the 25mm). Despite being heavier than the 25mm, this lens is still well balanced on the A7II. The lens has a nice tight weathersealed fit which instils confidence. Minimum focus distance of 80cm is acceptable for this focal length. Since this lens release, Sony have introduced their G Master 85mm f1.4 lens which is reportedly even better than the Batis for bokeh quality. However that lens is much more expensive, heavier and has no IS. For me, the Batis is a better fit for my needs and I would definitely recommend it for your lens collection. |

compared to: | ZA 85/1.4 Planar The Planar was my favorite lens on my former A99. For my personal taste the bokeh and microcontrast of it is on pixel-peep-level slightly ahead. |
price paid: | 1.149 € new |
positive: | Built quality, haptic, colors, contrast, outstanding center performance, very good borders wide open, beautiful bokeh |
negative: | ?? :-) |
comment: | I am happy to have found a more than worthy replacement of my aged Planar 85 (however I would have kept it, if it would not have the old/slow screwdriven AF). With the Batis 25/2 I was a lucky guy, when I grabbed one already months ago. Already so happy with that Batis I could await anymore the delivery of the Batis 85. Under "Positive" I already mentioned everything in short. Trust me, watching results using this lens you quickly become Batis-addicted. Honestly, considering every aspect, the Batis is the best lens I have ever used. |

comment: | Great lens, just at f5.6 can generate long star spikes in night scenery; able to achieve what Zeiss old MF lenses level which those Sony " Zeiss" lenses (Zeiss such as 24-70 f2.8 ZA) lack of. |

positive: | Absolute top image quality, well sized. |
negative: | Plastic round shade... effective but ugly. |
comment: | As today, the better of all portrait lenses I've owned. At least on par with Sony 135 F1.8, way better than 85mm. I'm testing during these days on A7RII. Stunning. |
