positive:+ built like a tank
+ f1.4
+ sharp at f/2
+ great colors, bokeh at > f/2
+ inexpensive
+ AF fast
negative:- lens hood not more than a gimmick
- flare / sensor reflections
- bokeh at f/1.4-f/2
- relatively low contrast
comment:I got this lens (crossed xx version) with oily aperture but otherwise in excellent condition for a steal. My friendly mechanic cleaned and lubricated the lens for 50 bucks. I have added a 49 to 62mm step-up ring and a 62mm metal screw-in hood for 7 bucks, which effectively eliminates veiling flare. The lens still suffers from sensor reflections from bright objects / light sources in the frame.

Update: I like the new Sony 50mm f/1.8 quite a bit better, new coatings are superior, circular aperture helps, now using the Sony 50mm f/1.4 on FF.

positive:Very light.
Bright aperture.
Great dof control.
Good range.
Focuses pretty fast.
Good build quality.
Great colours.
Competitive price, used.
negative:AF can be noisy.
Hard to find one in mint condition where I live.
Not very sharp wide open for my tastes.
A bit "dreamy" somehow (maybe a bad copy?).
Focus ring turns when focusing.
comment:Great lens for day-to-day use, especially if you're on a budget.

I don't see anything different than the new Sony version, only cosmetics wise.

Although there is a slight improvement in flare control and PF/CA in the Sony version. But you really have to be pixel peeping here. And I'm not into those kinda things too much, so I'm giving Sony the benefit of the doubt.

The price is very nice for such a lens, especially if you can find one in mint condition.

I really hate the ring turns when it focuses, I keep on accidentally stopping it by grabbing it.

Besides that, it's a lens you are sure to use alot.

comment:Found this at the same time as 2 other 50/1.7

After testing the 3 this was the keeper.

Small pull out lens hood is useless, I bought a rubber hood type and works much better.

Very sharp for me at 1.8 or 2, I rarely use it at 1.4

Nice OOF

comment:This is the lens that stays on my camera most of the time, since it's actually usable for most situations. The large aperture makes it perfect for indoor and portrait shooting, where you can make use of natural light instead of a flash.
The sharpness is amazing even wide open, and if you stop it down a bit, you'll find the "sweet spot" where sharpness, color, and bokeh is just sensational.
In all, a very recommended lens.

negative:the hood is good for a laugh, not a D lens
comment:To save weight I usually leave my primes at home when travelling. But there are quite a few occasions where I miss this lens for its low light qualities.

It's a very good lens. Still I haven't used it much lately as I can handle most situations with the Sigma EX DG 28-70 1:2.8 I like the extra weight, size and freedom of the Sigma more. The 50mm feels tiny in your hands.

I have owned this lens for more than 10 years now and didn't know it has an inbuild hood until last month (because of reading Dyxum). The hood is worth a laugh.

comment:This is a marvellous lens. I got it for lowlight shooting and for achieving a narrow DOF.

It is a bit soft at f1.4 to f1.7, but at f2 the sharpness kicks in strong. It's very usable at f2 in low light. It's not as sharp as the CZ16-80 or my macro lens, but it's pretty close.

Build wise it is solid and of good metal construction.

Colours are very nice, with a pleasant bokeh at low f-values. It's not perfect, so no 5 rating.

Being a good 50mm lens, there is no discernible barreling or pin-cushioning effects.

The hood is a bit of a disappointment

comment:My favorite lens! I've never seen any lense sharper from f/2.2 to F/4. That lense is rated by photozone as the sharpest 50mm on the market, better than Nikon and Canon's 50 f1.2...

Performance at its range are better than zeiss 24-70 ( a 1600€ glass...), so I give it naturally 5.

You never go wrong with a 50. A must to have!

No flare or CA is noticed and I have to admit, it is a joy to shoot at night.

comment:This is a great lens. It's autofocus is quick, and is sharp past 2.2. It has a great metal build and feels good on the camera. It has a pretty hokey built-in hood which doesn't help anything. The lens does have pretty good flare control, as I have never had a problem with flare.

It does suffer from sensor flare as some other old minolta lenses do also. If you shoot at small apertures, you can get a blue spot in the middle of the frame. Although, this is generally not a problem, because you don't buy this lens to shoot at small apertures.

hood is a joke
comment:Yipee - what should I say - this is the first lens when I started photography 18 years ago; first used on a 9000 and then on the 9; I never give this lens away, it's really build like a massive tank, robust; you'll get a little bit bokeh (if you ask for more: take the 135 STF - yeahhhhhhhh), the colors are the best here, warm, typical Minolta. On the A700 the colors aren't as good as I expected, when comparing the Sony version and the Minolta version original you see a difference in color; so if you intend to buy it for digital, I recomend the Sony copy.
One negative comment: The hood is a joke - really.
Otherwise I'm really happy and will never exchange this lens and follow the rule: Use primes or G - Zooms...

I use it as my walk around lens though I am not always convinced at the colors it gives, could be just my eyes. I would give it a 4.5 if given the option.

catches reflections from the sensor easily
comment:A great lens, very sharp from f2 downwards. On an camera with APS-C sensor itÄs a great portrait lens with beautiful bokeh

comment:I purchased the lens damaged and had it rebuilt. I've shot it, side by side, against the brand new SONY 50mm f/1.4 to determine the quality of repair it received. Overall, they did a great job on the lens, in my esimation ... but the new SONY is still noticeably sharper. So, if you are going for the best shot available, the SONY has it.

If you are willing to take a bit of an IQ hit (for sharpness) and save a few bucks, the Minolta 50mm f/1.4 is definitely close. I have not shot it on the Minolta 7000/9000 since the repair and cannot provide that comparison.

positive:- beautiful bokeh
- sharp
- small and light
negative:- aperture only round to f/2.0
- focus ring
- lens hood
- looks strange on the Alpha 100
comment:I haven't used this lens much yet, having bought it only recently. Right from the first photo, the beautiful creamy bokeh won me! One point to note is that the aperture is only round to f/2.0; from 2.2 onwards, out-of-focus specular highlights show up as heptagons, but still smoothly lit.
Seeing the comments here, I was expecting an exceptionally sharp lens. It is sharp, but my Sigma 70mm macro has the edge over this one.
Along with everyone else here, I find the manual focus ring far too small, and the integrated 'lens hood' somewhat a gimmick. I haven't used the lens in situations where it was tested, though, so I can't comment on its effectiveness.
This lens does look a little strange on the Alpha 100 - too small and stubby. But who buys a lens for its looks?
To summarize: I can't compare this lens to the 50mm 1.7, so I can't say whether it's worth the extra money. It is a great lens, and I'd buy it again without hesitation.

Update: this lens is quite soft at f/1.4 (or at least, loses contrast if the image contains large light areas), and vignettes even on APS-C. It's significantly sharper at f/1.7, and the vignetting is only slightly noticeable. I'm happy with it, and my review above stands; it is wonderful for low-light portraits.

Flare, especially sensor flare at f/1.4
comment:In situations were flare may be possible, I have gotten nasty sensor flare at f/1.4 and it seems to be controlled at f2+. I changed to a good screw-in metal hood to make up for the practically useless built-in one, was definitely a beneficial change in the RS series.
Other than that, this lens is a beauty. This would be my 2nd favorite lens after the 100/2. Bokeh is outstanding, creamy OOF with very smooth transition. I have taken alot of my favorite photos over the years with this lens at f/1.4, where it is still decently sharp but DOF is hair-thin. The images have so much character, a special something. At f2, this lens is *very* sharp.
With film this lens *is* my favorite, especially B&W. It has become my go to lens for shooting on B&W. And with film, no worry of sensor flare. :)
Amazing bargain, even at ~$250. I wouldn't hesitate to choose it over the f1.7, even with the price difference.

negative:Sometimes I get some flare when I didn't expected any (especially @ 1.4)
comment:1.4 gives the ability to shoot at night, but watch the shallow DOF!

I love the build; compact and strong! (will last forever)

If I compare pictures with the sigma 20-40 @ 40/5.6 the difference with the 50/5.6 is still amazing!

But most of all, I love the every day action: with this lens every picture I take has the contrast, colors and DOF that I wanted, time after time, after time!

Buy it if you have the possibility!

comment:Truly a great lens. I shoot calendar photos with models in scenic settings. I can set aperture priority to f5.6, the focus on spot, then pretty much totally concentrate on the picture and forget about camera settings and focussing. I can be sure of a sharp model's face, great bokeh, and pleasing color. The lens delivers great images if I compose well. I use a pretty large aftermarket lens hood so flare isn't an issue. Combined with the A700-a pro's outfit.
