comment:I really like this lens. I use it more and more. Nice to have the f1.4 available in low light situations. Did have some strange focus motor sounds a couple of times, but it is OK now after some self-servicing (misplaced spring for aperture retraction). Very good build quality!

I give it 5 for flare control. I have no experience of flaring, but I mainly use the lens at night time.

Well made but not chunky

Built-in lens hood a bit fiddly
Small focus ring
comment:A beautiful little lens, this is my "visiting museums" lens for it's brilliant low light performance with no flash. It's also really good for portraits. The focus ring is a bit small, but feels very smooth - lovely to use. The built-in lens hood works okay, but you can't pull it out if the focus is all the way in, so it's a bit fiddly to use.

comment:Many have posted that this lens is soft wide open at 1.4, but i don't think it's that bad. It's more the shallow dept of field that can course some problems.
Some test shots at F: 1.4, 1.7 ans 2.0
http://picasaweb.google.dk/clausgedved/50mm14

The lens is compact which makes it very comfortable to use. But somehow i like the build of 50/1.7 RS just a little better. But i guess it's a matter of personal taste.

negative:Poor Bokeh. Plastic slide out "hood".
comment:I really don't have anything to compare this to, but the more I use this lens, the more I want the RS or Sony version for better bokeh. The extra speed is worth it against the 1.7 IMO, as I love to shoot in low light and for shallow DOF.

Wide open, bokeh is acceptable, but sharpness is only suitable if you want a "soft focus" effect, such as weddings, certain feminine portraiture, florals or glamour shots.

I've heard about sensor flare on this lens, but haven't experienced it yet. Haven't tested for it, either.

positive:- Sharp
- Good build
- Fast
- Colour
- Great for portraits
negative:- Non D
- lacks circular aperture
- occasionally observe some strange bokeh wide open
- Not as great value as the 50/1.7 (which I consider another fantastic lens), but a bargain compared with the new Sony version
- AF sometimes hunts
comment:This is the lens that spends most time on the camera as I much prefer available light to flash, and is obviously very portable.

I've never used this without the (non-standard) rubber hood it came with, so I can't really vouch for the standard flare performance.

In real world usage I've observed little performance difference between this and the 50/1.7. Being that bit faster is great for low light, but in those situations I tend to need to manual focus with this lens, and the tiny depth of field makes the task even harder!

positive:Luminosidad extrema.

Great bokeh, soft wide open but sharp at f2 and RAZOR sharp at 2.8. The second lens ever produced by Minolta for sharpness. Only the 50mm Macro has best MTF curves.

It should perform even better on film.
The best employ on APS-C is portaiture IMHO

positive:Great image quality, solid build
negative:soft at F1.4
comment:This is a brilliant lens. In my experience image quality is excellent from F2.8 onwards. At F1.4 however, the images become very soft (improving at F2). But it does allow for nice flash free pictures on a digital camera (with sharpening in Photoshop). Although bokeh and colour are always a matter of personal opinion, I really like it. Colour is very neutral and bokeh is maybe less special than on my 70-210 but I would say that is more natural. It is a great portrait lens on a digital camera! Finally, I do not have any flare complaints. If you can get it, buy it. By the way, I have also used the F1.7 version and the F1.4 is better (but much more expensive!)

Extreemly nice bokeh at f/4 (flowers, people)
negative:The built-in lense hood is crap, may be functional for film cameras ?

The Focus ring is very small, so i need more time getting used to it.
comment:I borrowed this lense of a pal, for a family reunion.

On digital it becomes a 75mm which is too much for indoor photography of people, very often i needed to step 2-3 meters away from people, to capture a croud - the reunion were held in a 6x6m tent so there weren't much room for a 75mm

however, those pictures i took, at f/2 ~ f/6.3 were amazing, very sharp and clear. i mostly took portrait'ed pictures because of the missing fov.

Highly recommendable - if you find one: BUY IT !

i'd be happy having this (or similar) and a 30mm/1.4 for family shots...

comment:A good alternative for any portrait lens (~75mm considering the 1.5x crop factor), will do well as a one-lens set-up for the 7D/5D compared to kit zoom lens (the 35mm f2 is more desirable). You can easily do foot-zoom (walk-around to change perspective and coverage). The macro version (f2.8) is also a more versatile option (will do portrait, macro, and all-around lens).

comment:My 50mm / 1.4 AF is of the first series. I never used a 50mm / 1.7 AF before, so I can't compare these two AF lenses. Though I have user experience with earlier 50mm lenses from Minolta, like the MD Rokkor 50mm / 1.2, 50mm / 1.7 and 50mm / 1.4.

I like both the 50mm /1.4 AF and the MD rokkor 50 / 1.2 very much, especially in low light scenes. As a mainly analogue photographer (slides) I prefer not to use a flash all too soon. So these primes have become my favorites.

Also on my Dynax 5d. :)

For shade I use a screw-on hood of a 50mm f/1.4 MD Rokkor, together with a cap that fits this hood

positive:Sharpness, 1.4, weight, fast AF, funny not to be taken seriously build in lens hood
negative:Price secondhand, 49mm a bit odd size wish it was 55mm
comment:Just bought this lens to replace my 50 1.7, I really liked my 1.7, my first prime, it showed me why one would prefer a prime to a zoom in some situations, because of it's sharpness, nice colours, low light usage. shot a lot of indoors pictures with the 1.7. 50mm is my favourite size indoors. now I use the 1.4 which seems to be just a bit nicer than the 1.7. I like the colours of my particular copy very much, it's bookeh is nicer than the 1.7 & it's really good at F2 onwards

positive:- superb sharpness, contrast
- neutral colour
- incredibly fast AF
- low light capabilities
- small, light weight
- no distortion, ...
negative:- built-in lens hood should be a lot bigger to be serious
comment:I'm very impressed with the lens' focusing speed, lack of noise thereof and great sharpness, overall an excellent optical quality. Wide open (f1.4) it's a little bit soft, but this is as expected and no real surprise, from f2 and onwards extremely sharp. The increased low light versatility which is what I purchased it mainly for is remarkable, the only minor weakness of this lens may be that you have to move your feet to compose ;-). Minolta should have add the "G" suffix to this lens and include it in their 35/f1.4, 85/f1.4 and 200/f2.8 G lens line up.
