compared to:28/2,8, 50/1,4, 135/2,8, some zooms
price paid:550 Euros (used)
positive:- full metal barrel
- big, non-rotating focus ring
- awesome bokeh
negative:- prone to flare even with sun-hood in contra-light
- extending barrel is less convenient than internal focus (but a price I gladly pay for astonishing image quality)
comment:My favourite lens for both planned and spontaneous portraits. Whether it's just the combination of short tele focal length and wide aperture or some magical G characteristics, but pictures taken with this lens have a certain charm about them other lenses can't fully match. It's quite usable wide open (if you can handle the shallow depth of field) and easily becomes one the sharpest lenses I've ever handles stopped down to about 2,8 or smaller. It easily matches the resolution of the Alpha 100's 10 megapixel CCD.

comment:Well, I am very satisfied with this lens. Allows me to play those creative DOF games. Very sharp, amazing eyes on portraits. Lots of work then on the skin in computer :)

I dont regret this purchase. Indoor shots are a pleasure to do with this lens. Focusing needs more attention, thus I have to learn more how to work with this lens. But writting this review very satisfied, with no negative comments.

comment:Sharp. I like sharp but I'm getting inconsitant results compared to the KM28-75 f2.8. Most likely due to physical handling characteristics on the lighter bodied 5D. But for subjects 3+ meters away it's a dream. Surprising amount of image depth for a telephoto. Get a UV filter for it and things will pop and you'll have some peace-of-mind about the glass.

P.S. I changed the sharpness rating from 4.5 to 5. The technical among us have tested this puppy and their results are confirmed. Just because I have oddities physically handling the lens shouldn't be cause to tarnish it's rating.

the best build of any lens i ever had
highly characteristic
MF a pleasure
button (i use for DOF preview)
circular aperture
negative:selling on ebay for more than double the original price
minimum focus, would have like a little closer
this lens makes you work harder at being great
comment:i have wanted this lens for a long time

they are selling on ebay for almost double the value right now!

i walked into a local camera store a couple weeks back, and they actually had one behind all their minolta lenses! - $750.00 brand new!

it's funny, that seems expensive compared to B&H, but it feels VERY cheap because of the panic that seems to be dying out a little now.

anyhow, on to the lens!

i have had the pleasure of trying it out a few months back...now that i own it, it just may be the sharpest lens i have ever used...the 200/2.8 had the sharpness thrown, but this lens...wow, especially in the f5-f7 range.

even at f5.6, the bokeh is incredible!

at f1.4, the background turns to liquid color!...just incredible.

the circular aperture is nice too, really the best bokeh machine i have EVER used (keep in mind, i have never used the 35/1.4 G)

i will update my review as i have spent more time with this lens.

i feel i need to really work on my techinique to take advantage of it's powers.

at the moment, i do NOT feel worthy of this lens, but i love a challenge!

the best built lens, ever...all metal.

i feel bad marking all 5's on a lot of my reviews, as i am NOT a biased guy.

but when it comes to distortion and flare, i can think of much more important traits that get in the way...i like distortion, it adds character.

positive:Very sharp lens.
The lowest price "G" lens.
negative:Focusing issues... tend to micro-hunt if subject do not have enough contrast... can be very annoying on a KM 5D. Not a problem for the A700 or A900.

comment:F1.4 very shallow depth of view. F4 can be too sharp on people; show too much "imperfections".

Works great with the A700 & A900.

Together with the 35 1.4G, my daily walk around combo with A900.

positive:Awesome build. Probably the most detailed, sharpest lens available anywhere. Awesome Bokeh.
negative:Focus tends to hunt at times - seemingly at random.
comment:Critical manual focusing of this lens on the 7D pretty much requires the M focus screen. Doing portraits? You *cannot* go wrong with this one.

positive:Handling.
Remarkable image quality, especially OOF bakground.
Fast!
Build quality.
Value for money.
negative:No petal-shaped hood makes polariser use a bit awkward.
comment:One of the best portrait lenses ever made? I'd believe it.
This lens is lauded by everyone who has used it.
Guess what, it's all true.

I have used this for mostly portraiture, more with slide film than digital. It has a good working distance and is not so large as to be intimidating.
Looks very professional too :)

Capable of stellar results.
Unfortunately, my abilities don't allow me to come anywhere close to exploiting the limits of what this lens can do.

I bought mine new from B&H. Absolutely worth every cent.
In fact, now that I have used one, I'd pay double if I had to.
It's that good.

Center Sharpness excellent @ 1.4!
Contrast/ colours fantastic
Price is good for G glass.
negative:Focus is noisy and slow
Tendency to Micro-Hunt
comment:Very, very sharp lens. Wide open this is already very usable (but needs care with that razor thin DOF!)

Great choice for portraits - the focal length is more appropriate then the 135s on APS-C.

The contrast and colours this lens produces is what really draws me to this lens. Portraits taken with this lens have a really 'timeless' feel.

Make sure you print the pics out as the results REALLY sing in print (more then on screen IMO).

Bokeh is very, very nice when compared with everything but the STF.

The focus is very noisy on this lens, and sometimes can micro-hunt a bit which is surprising.

positive:Great sharpness, bokeh, contrast.
Perfect optical correction without any distortion. Robust build with impressive amount of glass (including huge front lens).
Fast focusing.
Looks great on any SLR and impresses everybody.
negative:Length changes during focussing (internal focus would be great).
Noisy focusing (SSM would be great although focus is fast).
Heavy.
comment:Absolutely great lens for portrait and available-light photography. Sharp to the edges, great bokeh, contrast, color rendition, no distortion. With AS on the DSLR, the 85/1.4G (D) is the absolute available-light-combination, allowing hand-hold shots with aperture 1.4 and 1/4 shutter speed. Closed down one or two stops, the lens gains in sharpness. No wonder that the lens is identified as one of the best lenses ever built. An absolute keeper in my bag.
