compared to: | Sony Kit Lens, KM 28-75D, KM 17-35D |
price paid: | 299 UKP |
positive: | Fast autofocus Nice construction. |
negative: | Poor corner and edge sharpness even stopped down to f/4.5. Vignetting very evident. Worse than the Sony 18-70 kit lens in most respects. Expensive in the UK |
comment: | I am not impressed with this lens at all - I must have a poor copy. It will be going back for replacement and hopefully the next copy will be OK. Further tests indicated a back focus problem as well. I have returned the lens and replaced it with the CZ 16-80 |

positive: | Focus is right on Colors are rich Sharp with nice contrast Very useful range |
negative: | Some distortion at wide end 17-70 would have been great... |
comment: | This one lives on my camera. Truly a walk around. To the point that I'm feeling bad about not using my primes more. They got this one right! |

positive: | Constant F2.8 Great focal range (25-75 film) Good build quality Sharp! Very Sharp! |
negative: | A bit heavy |
comment: | This is a great lens! Fast f2.8, nice bokeh, smooth zoom, wide manual focus ring, internal focus, good color saturation. It comes with a large hood, center pinch cap, and zoom lock. The feel is good and it is very Sharp. The focus is fast and spot on. This is the lens that is meant for the 5D. The focal length is my most used. This has quicky become my favorate and most used lens out of 8. Highly Recommend! |

compared to: | Sony 1.4/50 Tokina 2.6-2.8/28-70 Tamron 11-18 sony 2.8/70-200 zeiss 2.8/24-70 |
price paid: | 380 Euro (new) |
positive: | good sharpness very small fast focussing low price |
negative: | some distortion and vignetting, but nothing major. slightly soft corners at 17mm when wide open. a little loft wide open. built not up to professional standards |
comment: | This is an excellent lens. It's sharper than the 11-18 and the Tokina 28-70 ATX-Pro II. It even nearly reaches the Sony 1.4/50 and 70-200 SSM. However, it does not reach the sharpness of the Zeiss 24-70. Especially wide open. Slight vignetting issues at 17mm when wide open, but they can be corrected in RAW post processing. Picture corners at 17mm a bit soft, but still usable. I found that there can be purple fringing in wide angle shots. But I guess, it is not worse than with other lenses of this kind. Great lens for the price. My only gripe: The lens is a consumer lens. It's plastic built quality is giving up after about 40,000 shots. The rubber zoom ring came off. Also the zoom barrier at 17 mm broke... |
