positive:very cheap
easy to find
GREAT colors
very sharp(one of the best minolta under 100€)
very lightweight!
negative:500mm minium focus
very short zoom
comment:Don't understimate this lent only because is one of the cheapest and easyeast to find or by it's plastic apparence:
this is one of the greatest minolta lens and it's a must buy for low budget and even on hight budgets!

the body is made of plastic and rubber,it's not good as the old "beercan style" but it's very lightweight and usable and the general quality is great,a lot better than the 18-70.
Mechanically the lens is also great:
fast and not too noisy;have also a good boken and flare control.

The only thing bad about this lens is the lack of a macro(500mm minimal focus is a lot also for closeups)and a wider zoom range.

In my opinion if you have few bucks to spend buy it even if you won't regret it even if you have similar lens because it's very lightr

comment:I got this lens in a Dynax 500si kit and used it a lot on film.
Then the plastic mount teeth have broken and it is now almost useless but I have tested it on the two digital bodies (5D and A700) and it is a shame I can't use it. It is an interesting zoom "normal to mid tele" which allows light weight and delivers nice images.
Definitely better IQ than the other film kit (28-80) and than the 18-70 (excpet for the range, of course)

positive:Very cheap and easy to find in used market.
Most useful focal lengths.
Color is stylish under sunlight (warm and red/yellow-emphasis)
negative:A little under-sharp under strong sunlight and aperture wide-open.
Too plastic and loosen zoom ring/MF ring.
The color seems not suitable for portrait.
Lack of distance window.

comment:I was given this lens for nothing, the camera it was attached to was smashed when someone drove a car into the shop it was in.

One of the teeth?lips?clips? for the bayonet was broken off but it sits on the camera fine and doesent wobble but I dont pick it up by the lens just in case.

I thaught it would be crap but it was actualy quite sharp, better than the 28-80 or 18-70, the range is not verry usefull so I can't think of a situation in which I will ever use it.

Its optical quality far outways its build or range or usefullness.

comment:I bought this lens just to have something when I waited for my Sony A200.
The idea was to use this lens up until I´ve saved up some cash and buy the Minolta 24-105, but this lens has truly surprised me. It really is supersharp when stopped down between f5.6-f8 zoomed to 50mm and sharp at 35mm and 70mm.
It makes future lens-purchases more difficult since my "reference budgetlens" sets a high standard.

comment:I would keep this lens if I didn't have the Sigma 17-70. This is a very good lens for how cheap it is. It is one of the fastest focusing lenses I have used, which surprised me. It is also a very sharp lens. It has pleasant bokeh, is very lightweight, and rather small in size.

As I said, it has a small range, which is the only negative I can think of for this lens at the price you can get it.

comment:For the price these sell for you seriously can't say anything bad about this lens! It's extremely light (probably the lightest I've owned)
sharpness isn't the best I've ever seen but if your looking to buy this lens I don't think your blowing up posters to see the difference anyway. classic Minolta colors are present with this lens. A $4.00 rubber hood takes care of any flare problems. This is a excellent walk around lens for a novice or beginner photographer.

comment:This was my primary lens on my film 2xi for many years, and produced some superb images. These lenses sell very very cheap lately, but you should not judge the quality by the price.

Makes a good lens for full frame, more limited on APS-C. Build feels a bit flimsy, but the lens is light to carry as a trade off. I also own a KM 28-75/2.8 now, and I don't really use the 35-70, but for someone looking for a cheap lens, perhaps for a film body so you can use film and digital side by side, this is a good little lens.

positive:Small, light weight, fast focusing. seems to be fairly sharp. good color
negative:Really cheap build. rattles a bit. my copy the front seems to wobble when off the camera
comment:Like others have said, cheap build. Wobbly. feels like a toy.

It does focus fast and accurately. It's very light weight and has a nice small filter size.

I rated it low on Flare and distortion as I have not had the opportunity to really check these out. If it all works out well I'll change my rating.

It's really unfair to compare this against the Tamron, as it's such a slow lens that doesn't go as wide.

If this is available to you at a decent price it's just another tool in the bag.

comment:A littlle cheaper than the 28-105, but not quite as sharp. Shot portraits next to the Nikon 30-70 2.8 G lens on a 13mp body and results were as sharp if not sharper at f8. Colours were rich, but the look of the lens won't get you into any events.

Shooting wide open at 105... at minimum focus distance...wild results...
This is NOT a macro lens. Just ignore that label.

One of the more underrated lenses in the minoltta mount.

Cheaply built? Definitely, but I can live with that since its IQ (sharpness as well as colors) is excellent. When it breaks I will just get another used one for the price of buying a pair of sandals!!!

I have to say that te AF is quite fast and as the photos are always nice sharp it seems to work well on my Alpha 100.

What is quite strange but doesn't has a great effect on the photos is the distortion which hasn't the used barrel effect but some - other.

comment:I received this lens through a bulk purchase of minolta equipment. Comparing this lens to the other zooms I currently have, I was shocked at the sharpness. The colors produced by this lens was as good as my KM 50/1.7 prime. It's a cheaply built lens but also light weight. This is a good cheap lens for a casual walk around lens. comment:Came on my 35mm Maxxum when I bought it back in 1998. Served faithfully for years. I have taken thousands of photos with this lense and it is like the Duracell battery, it just keeps going and going. It is very bright and sharp. It captures color faithfully when used indoors with a flash and outside as well. Later, I purchased another to put on the old Maxxum body and gave to my sister. She mails me photos that she is taking with this lense and they are superb for an ameteur.

Have been playing with it on the A100 and it is stunning the detail I can pick up in the entire zoom range. I don't even need to stop it down and I can see individual eyelashes and grains in the eye from across the room with no distortion at all. Simply amazing for a plastic lens.

This lense is a great 2nd "carry around" lense. It is light and you can get them for under $30 on ebay.

Update. After comparing to some other zooms, I'm upgrading this to a 5 on sharpness (from 4 because on 200% crops, I cannot tell the difference between this lense and my 50mm prime). On build, I'm only giving it a 4 because of it's plastic body and mount. Since it is so reliable, I'd have given it a 4.5 for build - but then again, I've never heard of one breaking.

I've never seen any flare or distortion on this lense.

Really, the only downside is its limited zoom range - especially on APS-C. However, at family events, say Christmas morning, sometimes the wider range than a 50mm prime is handy.

comment:[Note: Performance judged on usage with a full frame camera]

This lens will perform honorably at 50mm, at all apertures. Besides this, the sharpness is never really satisfying, it is not bad, it is just mediocre. The corners are not really good. The vignetting is very bad at 35mm at f3.5, and still visible at f8.
The build is absolutely terrible. It is very toy-like. I think this is the first Minolta lens to feature a plastic mount... Did I say cheap...?

it was the lens on my first AF SLR (500si) but used it alot.
it can hunt sometimes in low-light situations.

positive:You name it, its got it! Sharp at all settings. Amazing at f8!. Super light. Very colorful and contrasty. Works perfect with 5D built in flash. Short range leaves no room for distortions that I've noticed. Perfect for casual indoor snaps. Blows kit lens away at same settings. Good portrait range on digital.
negative:Build might not be good on long haul. Zoom range a little short for outdoors.
comment:I got my copy for $40US (Gave that away and got a 2nd, even better one for 28$US delivered). Even got the original hood and it is in great condition. How do you beat this one!

Amazing shots from this lens! It is at least a match for the 50 f1.7 (with a little stop down) and may be better in some areas. Test shots showing amazing details and color. Exposure levels looked awesomely good. I wouldn't mind shooting a wedding with this sucker! Shoot between 5.6 and 8 under flash for good DOF and great sharpness.

Maybe I'll get another to keep as a spare. It is that good.

Only gave a 4 on flare as haven't had the opportunity to evaluate it yet.

Added: I took this by mistake instead of another lens to an airshow and got stuck using it for the ground displays and such. The shots were very nice especially considering the weather and I used quite a few in building my "Album" for this event.

positive:Very sharp across its entire range, cheap and lightweight.
negative:Plastic mount, flimsy feel.
comment:In my view this lens is a hidden gem, at least for 7D users. See my review of the excellent Minolta 28-85mm f3.5-4.5 , which is where I discovered the hidden talents of the 35-70mm. Sharp acrss its range and at all apertures. At f5.6, f8 and f16 this lens is a match for the prime 50mm f1.7, its incredible.

What is remarkable about this lens is its size, it appears quite insignificant, it doesnt look or feel like a pro quality lens and would probably look out of place at a wedding or photo-shoot , because of its small size. Yet this produces very very sharp images, with high contrast and a good neutral color.

Hail the Minolta "PLASTIC", in my view a hidden gem of a classic.

comment:Bought this lens in 96' as kit lens for my Dynax 500SI. It's a pretty sharp lens, but the mechanical build quality is awful ! On my 7D it sometime can't decide where to focus because of too much slack in the lens assembly. it will wobble forth an back untill i put my finger lightly on the focus ring to eliminate the slack, then it will focus. - Weird !
